Hi,

I hope to be changing the engine in spring and will need to do something about the diesel fuel in the tank while I swap all the ancillaries and generally fiddle about. If I can leave it in the tank then I will but if not then can anyone tell me a likely source for an inexpensive container in which to keep diesel fuel for a couple of months ? I was thinking plastic beer barrels from home brewing shops but they are not all that cheap and it seems a shame to use them for diesel somehow :)

Not sure as to where you live but if you have a PIRTEK supplier near you, they 'sell' hydraulic oil in 20 litre drums and at the depot I know about, Stevensons Way, CRAWLEY West Sussex, they used to throw the empty cans (20 litre) behind their premises such that the fire escape and passageway out the back was perpetually blocked. Now at the time, 2006, I did not need 20 litre empty plastic cans and I am not talking one or two but possibly 100 - 200 cans! ;)

They seem to always has a location on Industrial Estates? :)

On Google Earth, they can be found at:

Will this help?

I'm not sure where you're at, but I have a supply of large plastic drums (approx 35 galls). If you can collect you're welcome to one FOC.

Containers

I throw away 10 25 litre plastic containers every week. Strongly made with tight screw tops. They contain strong sodium hypochlorite(bleach) when I buy them. I have tried to return them to the supplier but they are not interested. Seems such a waste to me. If anyone wants any, I live in Hemel Hempstead and my boat is in Gosport. You can collect from either. Thanks Alan

You can put it in my tank if you like, the boat's only a few yards away :D

Seriously I have got a 25L plastic drum you can use if that helps, if you can find 3 more. I also have two 20L jerrycans but they may have rusted inside by now.

I had to drain my tank whilst I did some replumbing of the fuel system. I used a drill driven pump to transfer the diesel into a dustbin. Making the first job to fit a new tap on the tank outlet, I was then able to pump it all back the same day even if I hadn't finished the rest of the pipework.

100l of diesel is going to weigh about 85kg, plus the mass of the container.

Best to split it up between loads.

Suggest you see if there is an engineering company near you. These will use coolant and oil deluvered in 200 l steel drums - they will prbably give you one if you ask

If recycling containers which have been used for water based contents be aware that often the seals for the top will not be suitable for diesel. Not a problem for static storage of course
