Source and \"how to\" for teak deck screwcaps?

Where can I get some? Technique I have heard is to replace the screw with a flat head screw (why aren't they already flat heads?), cut and then chisel to fit flush, use superglue to fix in place

Not quite sure what you are intimating.
You can cut your own plugs with a plug cutter - usuall 10mm.
Dont use superglue unless the deck is so worn that you cant fit a normal plug, use varnish, some other poor soul may have to replace it !!!.
If the deck is so worn that you need to change the screws, ie - redrilling the holes deeper is not feasible, then maybe it's time for a new deck, or parts of.

To remove an old cap, drill a 1mm pilot hole in the centre, then screw a self tapper into the hole, this will normall list the plug, hence the reason for using varnish, not superglue.. aghhhhh /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

So you don't use any kind of glue then? Could be why mine are popping off!

Axminster Power Tools sell some really good tapered plug cutters and matching drill bits for this job here . And varnish is what a self-respecting boat builder would use as the adhesive, as suggested above.

Robbins Timber Ltd, Bristol sells tapered teak plugs if you don't want to make your own.

Re: Source and \"how to\" for teak deck screwcaps?

I did mine on the cockpit seating by using 10mm teak dowel, cutting with a tenon saw and glueing with eva glue, giving a light sand to finish. Cost a couple of quid

Re: Source and \"how to\" for teak deck screwcaps?

Trouble is that dowels are not the same as plugs. Dowels will have the end grain exposed and therefore suck in any water, whereas plugs will only show face grain - allowing you to match the grain with the surrounding timber and being much more water resistant.

I'd be interested to know where you can buy teak dowel from . All I've been able to find so far is beech dowel.

Well I hate to admit this then, but.......... I use epoxy to set my bungs

It will always depend on the condition and thickness of the teak deck. I remove the (in my case) nail and then redrill slightly deeper, replace the nail with a stainless screw and then epoxy the new bung in place. From memory I think mine are 12mm, flat off with a surform and then lightly sand.

All bungs are from reclaimed teak and cut with a bung cutter.

Works for me.
