I’ve discovered in chatting to people that this can be a real subject of contention. For what it’s worth I always set it to true depth. This then equates to charted depth plus height of tide. This is on the grounds that if I can’t remember I need my draft if 1.8 m to float in, what am I doing skippering a boat. However I know that some people vehemently argue that depth below the keel is the way to go and I can’t be bothered to argue with them. It’s personal preference and so long as you know how it’s set who cares?
Because I sail/motor in a variety of boats for a variety of people, I’ve learned that the best thing is to hang a weight over at the side and measure what the true depth is and then compare it to the reading on the echo sound and leave well alone.
