Sound proofing engine bay

Hi All

I need to replace the foam sound proofing on the bottom of my engine hatch it's about 2m x 1m. The present stuff is about 50mm thick and has like a foil on the underside of it.

Can anyone recommend anything I could use and where to buy it from, must be fire retardant

I'm in a similar position although my existing material is different. It's foam with a very thin black plastic surface coating and has a Lead type material about 3mm thick about 2/3 through the overall thickness of 30mm. The plastic surface is detaching and the foam disintegrating.
There seems to be lots of sheet materials that are claimed to be sound reducing but all seem very thin, 3-5mm.

Try a pm to Elessar. He has quite some experience of sound proofing. He is away enjoying his boat atm, so probably not logging into this forum, but will see a pm when he has time.

Talk to Classic Acoustics in Telford.
They produced a double loaded sponge with a polymer lead interlining and one side with a foil coating for the underside of my engine hatch - worked wonders at reasonable cost.
All 'O' rated for fire resistance.

I replaced the old foam ‘egg box’ type stuff on the underside of the deck boards over our engines with Siderise Aquafon from ASAP Supplies. I originally chose another type but it was too heavy so switched to Aquafon on the advice of their technical chap who reckoned it was the best to use. The fixings that came with it were hopeless but I used plastic discs with screws, which worked a treat. I used silver tape around the edges and on joins.

Just about any chandlery will supply good quality proprietary sound insulation .....at a price.
For the budget conscious ,the web, ie ebay provides names of companies who actually make the stuff and sell direct to the customer including delivery to your door.
From memory they also provide data sheets regarding just how good their products are at particular frequencies which enable you to compare to the likes of Halyard etc.
