On a whim I phoned for a berth at the marina at Town Quay in Southampton. The folks were friendly and helpful. It wasn't until I looked at the Channel Pilot to check their VHF channel that I found the Pilot says they don't take visitors.

They do now and the area is being spruced up, they seemed keen to encourage overnighters.

It's a small place, probably twice Gunwharf and like Gunwharf there is a bit of swell at times, lots of fenders required.

The entrance through the wave screen is a bit tight for larger boats, but once in it was OK.

It is right in the middle of the cruise ships and ferry terminals, plenty going on and an easy stroll into the city. It isn't upmarket but makes an interesting change.

Some pics of the cruise ships...

Arty contrast between the derelict and shiny new sides of Southampton :-)

Good to see you on the weekend K, any pics of the town quay moorings themselves? Great curry Friday night btw, despite Mr Random at the wheel of our cab!

Cheers

Well it can't be anything special. The bloody thing is in black & white! Even the camera we got our 10 year old lass from Argos a couple of years ago shoots in colour.

I'm glad to hear they are taking visitors now. I've spoken to them a number of times only to be told there are no visitors berths. No a bad location and a couple of places to eat nearby. Has anyone tried the really grand looking place that looks like it was an old bank not far away (opposite corner to an Asian restaurant) ?

Henry :)

I too went up to town Quay on Sat morn to take the missus shopping and also found them very friendly and helpful, right out side of the main doors there is a free bus to take you in to the centre (haven't been on a bus in years) in reality its only a five minute walk anyway.

Not Gunwharf as already stated but a pleasant change, I wouldn't want to permanently berth there though.

Echo all of that, we used the free bus as well, then found it was only 5 minutes to walk. One the bertholders welcomed us as new neighbours on Sunday and looked disappointed when we said we were leaving in 10mins.

Was a very good curry and a little overindulgent to have a vast breakfast just 10 hours later. I reckon the cab driver was practicing driving slowly up a narrow fairway on outdrives, left a bit, right a bit, left a bit...

Think we missed your suggest Italian in Soton, we ate a couple hundred yards up High Street, at Lupa. It was perfectly OK, but we noticed another just opposite the ferry terminal when we walked back that looked a little more upmarket. There was also a tapas place next to it that looked new.

As with the Indian, they were all busy, recession, what recession?

Did you get to Lymington?

Sorry - forgot to send you the link - this was the place that I was referring to:

In the end no - Berthons was full, so we decided just to head back to Bton, easy run back at 30kts the whole way. Spent yesterday gardening!

What's gardening?

It's what you do when you've been out for dinner with various chums every night for nearly a week and you need to burn off some calories. Still, I did rather undermine my efforts by rewarding myself with beer once I'd hacked down a bit of bindweed...

Cheers
Jimmy

Aww you've shattered the illusion. Ok Mr Crane...what did you use???

Canon 7d, bought after advice from the forum pros.

Web pics don't do it justice especially passed through quick editing on an iPad, but I'll now do my best to bore everyone with illustrated posts!

Having said that, why didn't I take some general shots of Town Quay like JtB asked? Doh!

Now that's an expensive bit of kit from which i should now at least like to see some whales leaping in the background!!!
