My daughter, a nurse, has forwarded a request for blood donations type A rhesus negative which is apparently very rare. Noëlie, one year old is suffering from leucemia and requires a (bone marrow ?) graft. The contact numbers are below. Please pass the message on.

John,

Unless people are in France, and nearby, it's going to be difficult to get blood donors directly, as logistics for a few pints here and there would be difficult. Have you considered contacting the blood transfusion service in UK, as they are superb.

For the marrow transplant part, there is a worldwide scheme to identify suitable donors, but compatibility goes way beyond just blood type. Most western countries are signed up to it, so I'm sure the doctors involved have put a request into the scheme already

I am type '0 Rh neg'. Thought this was universal.
Can this be used? Apparently often used for blue babies.
Please advise, would like to help if suitable.

Re: SOS Rare blood type (A rhesus neg) required for operation on baby

A bit of clarification on the bone marrow issue: The Anthony Nolan Trust keep a register of donors. When you join the register a blood test is done to give a tissue type.

If there is an approximate match for a recipient, a second test is done and ultimately a third test which is required to establish full compatibility. The second and third tests are only done 'as required' and eliminate most potential donors. They are not done up front because of cost.

I have been to the third stage but the patient died just before the op was due to take place. The briefing information about the op was pretty scary - it's a lot worse for the donor than the recipient.

A friend of ours has had 10 years remission from cancer as a result of this type of treatment so I feel - how could I not do it.

Re: SOS Rare blood type (A rhesus neg) required for operation on baby....

Have just spoken to National Blood service & British Bone Marrow Registry about this - 0845 7711 711 (to check if they were aware & able to help) also given them the french contact numbers.
Apparently tissue type is important not just blood compatibility.

Most willing to donate in principle (though going to Rennes isn't really on). However, what's the problem over A negative blood? A is about 45% of the population and rhesus negative is about 20% of all ABO groups, so about 9% of the population is A negative. The ratios in N France won't be significantly different from England.

\"Re: SOS Rare blood\" -THIS IS A WIND-UP

Ref this SOS, British Bone Marrow Registry have advised me, that this SOS is almost certainly a wind-up & was first noticed about 2 years ago.
If anyone knows different, please advise.
They are aware that many like minded caring people have been fooled by this SOS (including probably the originator on this forum) & acted in utmost faith to respond.

I'm A neg and male but 21% over the 40 age limit. But is this a wind up?

Complete tosh and boll****.

This was around about 10 - 12 months ago. It's a bizarre wind up and total cr*p.
