I may get chance to 'tick' France as I head round the SE this summer. With this in mind I have applied for the SSR III and put a courtesy flag on the todo list. Insurance informed.

My question is pyros and extinguishers. My pyros are museum pieces, should I just put them in a locker, remove from boat and go without, or is it a requirement to have in date pyros? (as a coastal sailor I see limited use.) Yes yes... I know I should buy shiny new ones every other year..

Dittto extinguishers, OOD but showing green on the dial, ignore/replace?

A night in Calais, how upset can they get?

Oh, may well have two jerrys of Tizer in the locker too..

Although there is a possibility that your out of date equipment could raise eyebrows, unlikely any action would result. If you are worried, leave the flares behind and buy a couple of new fire extinguishers - won't break the bank.

Much more important to have the correct documentation for your boat and crew!

Unlikely to be checked but having red diesel in cans would probably be a greater breach of the law than any of the other 'shortcomings'.

Don't forget to take your EHIC, using 'gorilla snot' stuff to stick it inside your passport. Uber-simplistic way to save a lot of hassle and avoidable cost....

Where does one purchase, um, gorilla snot? Have always wondered...would be useful stuff to have on occasions...

French customs have twice inspected dates on my flares.
Both times in date so no problem. Not sure what would have been said if not, but they did seem a bit "official" as they even looked at my ICC cert ( I was not inland) for which no one else seems to have been asked.
On the Isle de Groix the MOBO next to us even had to unpack his liferaft on the pontoon -so they were having a go
