Sorting out an orange peel spray job

I used to do this for a living, many moons ago. Somewhere in your post (I think) you said the guy was a one man band? Does this mean that he painted your boat (comparatively) cheaply? If you want a Rolls Royce finish, then Rolls Royce is a good place to look. If he painted your boat 'on the cheap', outside or in an unheated workshop then you pays yer money and etc. Did he use 2 pack, enamel or maybe cellulose? 2 pack would be the modern way (but requires the right environment, enamel is brilliant in the right hands, but more suited to trucks and coaches, and cellulose is what used to be used on cars. If your 'orange peel' looks okay from 6 feet away, and the guy didn't lift your leg you've got nothing to worry about.
 
I agree with Marine reflections above but would add that when i resprayed cars with two pack and needed to correct some bad areas/errors/runs I rubbed down with 1500 grade soaped. Use a 3M block with 1500 grade and fill rough surface of paper by rubbing it on soap first. Reduces the depth of cut and lubricates the rubbing down action a bit.
 
What yard are you in then? Powerboats or Peakes, as thay will guarantee the job and make sure it is done to your satisfaction.

We used Homer in Coral Cove, he did a great job on our bottom coats and glass work. He also does topsides as well. If you want real professional job ask for Nigel, the gut with a turned up eye. He would be your man to check your job over and give you some good advise.

I have seen re-spray a whole topside at his own expense, when it rained before the paint hardened enough, a good man and very well respected locally.

Although he is the sole owner operator, he occasionally hires a young unskilled lad to do grunt work, and he is not cheap in Trinidad terms where, I assure you, one does not need a heated workshop.

As I also mentioned earlier, he does have a good reputation. I am not looking for a Rolls Royce, As mentioned, the boat is a hard chine steel vessel and a mirror finish will not flatter her. The paint was two part Jotun Hardtop AS described on the tin as "High Gloss", that will do for me, I would just prefer the paint to be flat as well as glossy. Sadly, even at 6 mtrs, let alone 6 ft you can easily see the peel.

Thank you for those names. I am in PB who have a list of approved management approved contractors, and sadly I do not see either name on the list but I will ask about. Maybe I can ask Nigel for some unapproved advice, is he also in CC?
 
Going to arbitration today with an independent painter, a Jotun Tech Rep and the Yard management.
