Hi guys, I noticed your discussions earlier on about Blakes Brilliant enamel. What did you find so bad about it to make you change after so long? I was looking to change to Epifanes after that thread, but I cannot get the dark red colour I need for my toerails. I suppose on items like that Blakes should still be ok?
Compared to the previous Yacht enamel, I find that brilliant enamel flows poorly, drags (same thing really), retains brush marks or is prone to sagging. Gloss is not as good as Yacht enamel in my view. I have no evidence for this but it gives me the impression of being designed for spray application. I have had discussions with Blakes and you should know they view it as my fault - (a) I didn't stir it enough - they say (when you ring them, not on the tin), that you should use a wide (1") piece of wood to stir; I should have thinned it with No 1 thinners even though it did not look like it needed it (their words not mine) and I should have chosen a better day to do the painting. It is claimed it will last two years - might do if you lift out after six months - there was pretty poor gloss after winter in the mud berth although to give it its due, it stood up well to abrasion.
Now if you want a good gloss try their new non-gloss deck coating!!!!!! Fortunately I've managed to get some of the old last years' deck paint and the new stuff going tomorrow if I'm allowed out.
Thanks for the info. As I have already got a pot of the brilliant enamel, I'll try it on my toerails. Add the Owatrol and obviously stir it with a 1" wide piece of wood. Did they give you any other specifications like how thick, how long and what type of wood to use? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
I like the sound of the abrasion resistance - especially on a toerail so I'll give it a go.
Somewhat off topic, but does this mean that the Blakes deck paint I bought last year and have just half a tin of left is no longer available after I have completely repainted my decks with it? It does, doesn't it! Damn!!
Yeap! The new stuff, flows brilliantly and is clearly a different formulation. However, it is, despire the label which says non-gloss, a shiny finish which doesn't suit my taste. I find it also needs grit when wet which I have never needed to use with the old stuff. Fortunately there was one tin of the old stuff in the chandlery. The local yard say they now use International. Strange old world init!
Thickness - 1"! Stir very thoroughly 'even if it doesn't look like it needs it' is what I was told. It'll probably be fine for you. I was told that I was 'not a typical customer' whatever that means. I do have to say that with Owatrol it was fine.
Like you, I was using up old stuff (for some reason, probably my own idleness, I found I had two years supply of deck paint sitting on a shelf in the garage!).
At this rate, I will soon not merely not be a "typical" customer - I will not be a customer at all!
Varnish - used to use Blakes - now use Epifanes or Coelan or Deks Olje (depends where and what the object being "varnished" is)
Topsides, ename and undercoat - used to use Blakes, now use Epifanes
Primer - still use Blakes.
Antifoul - still use Blakes, but being advised to use International
Deck Paint - ditto!
That's after 35 years of being a loyal Blake's customer.
I'm pretty well in total agreement. I only used Blakes Anti-foul this year because I had a tin; there is noticeable slime below the boottop already so I shall be trying International next year.
I think you will find you can't get the old primer any more. They have this underwater primer and then a combined primer undercoat for above the water line. I got on quite well with that.
Deck - next year it will be International.
Enamel - I shall try Epifanes
Varnish - I'm still with the Classic Varnish which has Tung Oil and I'm quite happy with that. I also use the two pot stuff on parts which I admit is b' tuff but is clear and the timber underneath has bleached from the sun quite badly.
I don't think we are an important part of the Blake's market anymore.
I was mighty peeved to discover the old deck paint was discontinued after I'd changed my deck colour last year... just repainted with the new stuff and have found it is quite glossy, but I don't dislike that - it's the shiniest bit of my boat on her 70th birthday!
If anybody needs an extra tin of the old stuff to complete a coat Marine Bazaar in Plymouth had quite good stocks a week ago - as I found out when I'd just finished applying the new stuff! If you're not close I can always grab a tin and put it in the post - just don't tell ParcelFarce!
Totally fed up with Blakes, changing paint type, poor flexibility, cracking on top sides.
Gone to Epifanes. Its no more expensive than Blakes. Can get it on line and delivered in two days. One well known chandlers on Ipswich outskirts, said delivery would be 10 days. Put in on last week, very pleased. Goes further than Blakes too.
Careful, I found the new deck coating not as grippy when wet! I went back to the old stuff on Saturday. Nice matt and grippy without grit. How do they get away with selling the new stuff as 'non-gloss'. Do you think they ever use it themselves?
