Just coming up to renewal time, and the brokers have proposed a new insurer (navigators & general , part of zurich I think). Upon reading through the policy booklet, in the "whats not covered" section it has these items:-

• loss or damage resulting from electrolysis, osmosis or like conditions.

- wear, tear, depreciation or gradual deterioration.
- water damage to machinery or electrical equipment where the water ingress into the Vessel has occurred over a period in excess of 24 hours.

now this implies to me that in the oft quoted scenario of a seacock failing through corrosion and sinking the boat , I am not going to get a payout.

Has anyone else studied the navigator & general policy in detail, and concluded anything?

I have asked the broker for clarification, theyve come back with a few answers but nothing that makes me think my scenario would be covered. They've now gone away to get a direct steer from the insurer.

I found a thread on the saily section where everyone seems very pleased with navigator & general, but I'm not happy about these clauses as they stand. Am I being overly cautious?

There has been much debate in these pages and many of us favour http://www.yyachtinsurance.com/ they are very competitive, have a good (for us owners) policy and I can personally vouch a good record in settling claims. No connection other than being a contented customer.

However I think the NG policy does cover you for a failing seacock as the failure will not be gradual and the water ingress will all happen very quickly and well within 24hrs

+1 for Y Yacht Insurance. The extensive discussion on here some time ago convinced me to switch to them, with their coverage of the 'failing seacock' scenario mentioned by the OP being a key reason. That and increasing my cruising coverage from 30 sea days to unlimited at the same premium as Nav & Gen.

Never made a claim before but dinged props meant I had to make a claim with Y. All dealt with very efficiently and no quibble whatsoever. Very happy to recccomend them.

When I was insuring Rogue for the second year in 2007 I became aware of many insurers not covering damage by pests, and not covering damage caused by water getting into the engine via the raw water outlet. It seemed that there were very few things that Pantaneus didn't cover, so I insured with them for the next 2 years of ownership.

I suppose if there is a leak into your boat, and it's ongoing for a long time, and you don't fix it, it wouldn't be unreasonable for an insurer to say it wouldn't be covered. Given that it might take some time to notice and diagnose such a leak, one would hope that the time frame specified was reasonable.
