We have a Force 10 Butane Oven & Hob which we are very pleased with. However, the jet on the oven tends to soot up, the flame turns yellow and the oven doesn't get hot enough. I know what is happening - the gas is not burning efficiently - but I don't know why. We bought a new jet from Force 10 which appeared to solve the problem for a while, but now its sooting up again. Any ideas what might be causing this, and can I fix it myself?

Sounds like the pressure is low at that point .You'd need a manometer to make ajustments, if your cooker has this ability. If a new jet improved it does that mean the jet is wearing out ( I dont think so ) so it must be blocking up.
Butane is low pressure to start with and now it's cold it wont get better.
Have you thought about propane.

Cheers
Mick

David,

I'm afraid it's a very simple problem, the holes in the burner are reduced by ferric oxide.

Take the burners our and ream the rust out and you'll find the problem resolved.

There is a downside - after about 10 times of doing this the holes get too large and the flame becomes large, wavery and shot through with all the colours of the rainbow - you now have enlarged the holes too much.

I service my cooker about once every 6 months to prevent this - it only happens on cast burners (they can only enamel the outside) and is I'm afraid is a function of using a stove in a salt marine environ ment.

I am not a gas expert but based on personal experience, I doubt very much whether a partial blockage in the gas supply, either at the jet or the burner is responsible for either your soot or the yellow flame. Such a blockage is more likely to produce a smaller, blue flame. The yellow flame is, as you say, evidence of incomplete combustion and I would guess it is more air that is required, not more gas. Are there separate 'air holes' on your burners that allow the gas and air to mix before combustion? If so, ensure they are clear - this certainly proved to be the problem in my case, caused as Charles suggests, by a build up of rust. Effected a complete cure and luckily, I have never had to repeat the process.

ouch!

yellow flame = CO

have you got a carbon monoxide detector on board? it will eventually set of a normal cas detector but by then you're close to lethal concentrations.

The products of combustion are entering your boat. check that you have enough correct ventilation. the unstable yellow flame means that those products are dangerous ie carbon monoxide. do not use this appliance it is dangerous. I suggest that you have a registered gas installer (who specialises in LPG) check it out.
I would also suggest that your insurers would not cover you should you have any further problem. Sorry!

Too much gas for the amount of air ,check oven s location , for blocked ventilation
ie an oven has to vent normally at the rear of the hob if this gets "lilted " with fluff or blocked with bacon grease etc can cause your problem.Check gas pressure with manometer if you have one ,as overgassing has the same effect.Don,t mess with govenor unless you feel confident to do so as as mentioned your insurers may not do right by the misses.

Thanks for all the comments. Our boat is in Greece at the moment but when I get back I shall certainly check the airways for any blockage.

Thanks again.
