Sonning lock breakdown

No but they were tweating about something else yesterday - Thames Harbourmaster etc. Seems they weren't told. BTW Mapledurham on public/no lockkeeper at 10.30 this morning. Boaters coming down said the chap at Whitchurch was covering 3 locks but was coming to Mapledurham.

You can download the Customer Charter Lock Manning targets here:
Customer Charter Lock Manning 2018/19

You will see that Mapledurham is not a priority lock so there is no commitment for it to be manned at all times during duty hours - it is possible it may be double manned (or in extreme cases triple manned) with the lockie looking after two locks (or three).

This is an aspirational document so we have little or no redress if they fail to achieve the targets. However, you will note that about 20 or so locks are identified as "Priority". This means that you should find those locks manned during the published duty hours. There is every possibility that you may find any lock on Self Service between 1300 and 1400 for their lunch break, especially if there is no volunteer assisting.

Where double or triple manning is necessary, we have suggested that lockies should remain at their "base" lock and only attend the others if there is a specific need. This avoids all locks being unmanned while they are travelling between them.

Thanks Tony and to be fair, for the low volume of river traffic it's not a problem. It was good to see a patrol boat at Reading with the large numbers of passenger boats operating ferrying youngsters to the rock festival.

Pottered through at 1030 today, all working ok, Keith whizzing up and down on his scooter, volunteer chopping back the garden. All's right with the world!

I take my hat off to that man - soldiering on through all adversity always with a cheery smile and a wave.
