Can I use an normal floating fish finder inside my hull as a depth guage? The hull is angled and also the old sonar 'pot' into which I can submerge the sonar emmitter in oil, is about 1.5m under the waterline.

1.Can they be calibrated for being lower than the waterline?
2.Can they be calibrated for being at an angle?
3.What would you suggest I get for the cheapest model with a low water alarm? Nothing fancy.

1) some can, some can't

2) none that I know of but if your pot is vertical and you get the right ransducer then it will work.

3) have a look at the lowrence & Garmin range, well priced & well speced, but so are lots of others, fact is you can often find a good fishfinder cheaper than a "quality" depth gauge

Regarding point 2 , this always used to confuse me until I saw a picture. Basically the beam is quite wide and arc shaped, so the depth is correct for moderate heeling angles. Some boats which heel dramatically have two transducers and switch between them ( I've even heard of mercury switches being used to achieve this automatically ).

3) Garmin or Humminbird.
