Yes, we turned back after 75 minutes as the sea was picking up from moderate to rough, the viz had reduced to zero, and the kind lady at Holyhead Coastguard had just issued a warning on VHF of F6-7 Southerlies for 12 miles off.
After we turned, yours truly felt very unwell - not seasick (well I don't think so), more a balance problem coupled with difficulty breathing.
Mrs SV took the helm and got us back to Malahide SWM as I lay down on the saloon seating listening to her adjust the autopilot a couple of degrees here and there.
So there you have it - trip postponed until further notice.
A few images of the trip up to the point where I lost interest...
Leaving Malahide Estuary in Southerly F4:
Sea state is slight - looking good for a steady 20 knots:
Viz closing in from the South - seas state moderate with the odd rough bit here and there:
Viz down to zero - fog on the foredeck - sea now getting very rough - this ain't fun anymore:
My thanks to Mrs SV for getting us home safely. She remained very calm and used the VHF and Autopilot with skill. She even had the consideration to call LittleShip and Kawasaki who were monitoring Ch 72 to let them know in case the were getting worried.
As you can see - she is very well trained ... ouch! what the flook was that for /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
So the little exercise you put on to test the crew's skills went well then!
So very pleased you both got back.
After the battering I got on Friday night, whilst lying in my bunk, I was most surprised you even left port, but I understand it was sunny when you decided to go.
Mick, glad to see that you got back safely and congratulations to Mrs SV!
Hope your feeling better now and we all look forward to meeting up later in the month.
Now let's get some things strait here!
You don't stick a "Ddraig Goch" on yer VHF spikey thing.
Turning back f6/ 7 pah ,humbug ,whimp.
Just been to Conway and back Today with Martynk and Son + Baffled.
At least a 7 when We left blew up a bit fresh to an 8.
On the way back it was storm force 9 ish.
In a little Rubber Duck on the Way There. Dave (Baffled) drove His Four Winns 248 back with Mart and Son aboard, battling gamely over Lavan sands.
I took a shorcut again (thought I might get a Salvage job) anyway He made it and by now it was up to Nigh on Hurricane winds and We had to slow down to 18 kts.
Well these sports boats slam a bit.
Plus we rescued some people on the way back and had to kill a Shark.
Well I got a rope round the prop and the bugger was annoying Me when I was untangling it in Me snorkell gear.
Anyway they,ve got rough skin those beggars but it will come in handy for scrubbing My bottom.
So just another normal Day in the Menai Straits.
Yer just have to get used to the Irish Sea.
No! It's True I tell You. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Would I tell a Pork Pie? Years of Training as a Car Salesman has taught Me never to exagerate or tell a Fib!
Glad Your OK Matey. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Like to kiss the Blarney stone One Day.
Then I could tell a fine Story.
Here's to the next Time.
Put the Dragon on the Port side.
On it's own Mast.
