December already! In the wacky world of magazine publishing, it will soon be spring again!

Anyway, this month, I'd like you to pretend that it is spring, and that you are planning a trip to the Isles of Scilly in your 45 ft sports cruiser, in company with a less experienced friend in a very similar boat. You're both looking forward to it, until he discovers that there are no marinas there, and only ten visitors moorings for boats over forty feet. What advice would you offer that might allay his fears about the idea of anchoring overnight?[/quote]

All the usual WNS "rules" apply. Please be particularly aware that your contributions may appear in Motor Boat and Yachting, but that lack of space means that they need to be pretty pithy (No, I don't mean you need to take the pith -- stop sniggering at the back!:D)

Since most motorboats are equipped by the manufacturer with pathetically undersized anchors and chains, the first bit of advice I'd give my friend would be to check whether his bow roller can handle a larger anchor and to see whether his windlass can handle a larger size of chain. A 25kg Delta with 70m of 10mm chain should ensure a more restful night's sleep on a 45 footer. Yes I know this will cost a bit of money but what's peace of mind worth?
The second thing I'd say to my friend is that we're not going to the Scillies unless there's a great big anticyclone stuck over the UK for a few days. Yes this might bring some poor viz but it should ensure light winds for a few days. Lastly, I'd say that we would plan to arrive in the islands mid-late morning on a weekday not during July/Aug which would give us the best chance of grabbing one of those elusive buoys so we wouldn't have to worry about anchoring anyway

Come on guys! No ideas on how to anchor?
Dig it in or not dig it in?
Alloy or steel?
Four times the depth or twelve times the square root of depth or give it all you've got?
Anchor on mud? sand? shingle? clay? weed? rock?
2-3kg per metre or more? or less?
Manson, Studland, Bruce, Delta, CQR?

Well if you want a thread on the best type of anchor, I am sure the forum will oblige :D
Well I thought it probably would.
In fact, considering how controversial anchoring sometimes seems to be, I'm surprised the server hasn't blown up yet. But for some reason everybody is keeping stum.
