Re: somebody needs information about North East It

Angelo , I am planning to sail a multi up from Greece to Croatia this August.
probably picking up crew from Bari and continuing from Vieste up the Croatian islands.
I would like to find some boatyard up a river in Northern Italy somewhere east of Venice
where a multi could be lifted out for the winter.
Any suggestions?
Know of a suitable place south of Venice in your area, maybe even afloat!
David.

Re: somebody needs information about North East It

David,
I might be able to help as I'm based in Trieste. There's a number of boatyards here 'up a river', including my marina in Monfalcone. Very safe, very secure, very friendly. It's about a mile inland up a dredged waterway and safe from the bora. If you give me the beam and length of your boat, I'll check out their travel lift and come back to you. There are a couple of other British boats there, but mainly Italian and Austrian (I think the owners are Austrian, actually). It has the advantage of being just 5 miles from the airport (Ryanair to Stansted daily) and has good rates.
Other places include the marina at Aquileia (once Rome's second largest port but now 5 miles inland!), Grado (lagoon), Porto San Rocco (Muggia - new marina, rather plush, rather pricey but can handle big boats). Into Slovenia, you have Izola, and in Croatia, Umag although I'm not sure they could lift a multi.

Re: somebody needs information about North East It

Thanks Metabarca,
My multi is 12mtrs by 7.5mtrs, it's an embarrassment isn't it!?
Also a tri so not really suitable for a travelhoist unless it's 8mtrs
wide AND over an 8mtr dock (which some aren't!).
I'd be interested in the winter charge afloat say Sept to May inc.
A Wharram owner did the same two years ago but of course I've
lost the recommendation except that it was several miles up a river.
Maybe Aquilea?

Re: somebody needs information about North East It

Hmm, you are a bit broad...! My marina (Nautec) could find a spot for you for the winter (as long as you don't arrive too early - you'd have to go at the end of one of the pontoons so they'd have to wait for someone to be lifted out). Cost euro 264 pcm, VAT included. In the same canal, there are another 3 marinas so I'm sure a mooring could be found ok. The prices are all about the same.
Aquileia is indeed several miles up-stream of a river (Natisone) which itself debouches into the lagoon - not much good for a day's sail but nice and cosy for the winter. Checking their website, I see that a 12 x 4m (NB!) mooring costs around euro 400 pcm.
Nearby too is San Giorgio di Nogaro but I think it's really only for a few local boats, and rather a dump. Also up a canal off the lagoon, however.
Porto San Rocco is probably the best equipped if you wanted a lift-out, but also the most expensive and poncey: 'gin-palace friendly'. Tries to be a bit like Port Grimaud...
If you want to take this further, just drop me a line!

best regards

Lucian

Re: somebody needs information about North East It

Thanks Lucian,
264/pcm is not a lot more than I'm paying for dry storage in Preveza marine.
As long as it includes any multihull surcharge.
Are you actually living onboard in Monfalcone at the moment!?
I would quite like to have the boat somewhere I could drive to in spring 05
for a major refit. Although that is easier when lifted out. Do they have a crane!?
David.

I gave them the measurements (loa and beam) and that's the price they came up with - they are aware it's a multihull. As for lifting out, something should be possible, if not at Nautec, at least with one of their three neighbours. Nautec has a travel lift (no good for you) and a crane (not sure if big enough). Certainly a crane can be had - they build liners next door after all! If you like, I can delve further (give me your weight too).
I'm not living aboard at the moment - I live in Trieste and the move aboard is still some way in the future (and on a bigger boat!).

far as I know in Chioggia just south of Venezia are very organize and quite cheap in winter time, and is a big town with a lot of facility .Another good idea is also to put the boat in Croazia in some small marina .Two years ago I spend win tertime in Dubrovnich and was cheaper than Italy. You can find the new catalog with the price of all ACI marina in Croazia at the follow:www.ACI-Club.hr
and last but not the least in Ravenna where I live there is a big new marina and they will be happy to rent a berth in winter because is still half empty, and this is one of the safest port in Adriatic sea (let me know if you are interesting to Ravenna and I will find some price.

ciao

Thanks Angelo,
Interesting to hear the Ravenna marina is half empty.
My pilot book is not up to date!
I would be interested in the price for a multihull of 12mtrs *7.5mtrs
for September to May inclusive. Especially if there is a multihull surcharge!
I suppose the nearest airport is Bologna.
Does the marina have a website!?
David.

Hi thank you for you offer of assistance. We are currently in La Spezia and making our way south and the hopefully to Croatia and East Italy. Do you know of suitable marinas we can leave our boat on the west side of Italy ( around the Rome area). We have found it very difficult to leave the boat for a few weeks while we return to the UK especially over the summer months. Thanks .Brian

Re: somebody needs information about North East It

Brian,
I can confirm that from what I've heard security can be an issue in southern Italy, although Rome seems ok (yes I know - not really southern Italy!).

David,
No website, I'm afraid for Nautec or others in Monfalcone (or at least none that provides info). Aquileia is on: www.marinadiaquileia.com/main.htm
Croatia would indeed be an option but prices have shot up this year and Dubrovnik is a long way to drive to (whether by the scary coast road or across the Adriatic). One of the marinas in Istria might suit you better: Umag, Izola (Slovenia), Rovinj, Pula. However, Croatians are not into 'tlc'.

Re: somebody needs information about North East It

Angelo , I found the Ravenna marina website but they are not answering emails.
I'd be grateful if you could enquire about charges for multihulls, Sept to May incl.
I'll try faxing them too.

Re: somebody needs information about North East It

Lucian, thnx for all the info.
The flights are so much cheaper to Italy, I expect that's where we'll end up.
I think security is a problem everywhere. the only place my boat was ever
broken into was Chichester harbour!!
I have used several harbours in deep south Italy, and occasionally been bothered by urchins.
The strangest place was Torre del Greco south of Naples. Not one of St Rod's better
recommendations. The ormeggiatori charged like wounded bulls, but it included protection!!
