Ref Twister Ken's proposed trip. A couple of navigational bits you may or may not know about.

Sorry if I'm slightly vague but I've left all my charts on Magicienne.

1. My charts show 2 PHMs just north of the Port de L'Est at the entrance to Cherbourg. Both are chown as lit. One is called La Truite and is still there. The other (un-named) which was about 1/2 mile NE of Ile Pelee was not there. I do not recall a nav update to that effect.

2. My charts also show a NCM East of Cherbourg in between La Pierre Noire NCM and Les Equets NCM. I can't remember it's name but my waypoint name for it was "BDR" so it shouldn't be too difficult to find on your chart. It too is no longer there. Again I am not aware of a nav update.

Unless I'm going completely bonkers, I am certain about this. I checked and re-checked my waypoints and we searched for both marks to no avail. I should say that I did see them both last year when we were over there.

Hope this is helpful on a dark rainy night.

excellent - clearly more use on the way over when anyone will be capable of looking out for navigation marks!

I wonder if we could hold a competition for the best passage plan and chartwork - hopefully dispelling some of the myths around dependencies on electronic navigation etc etc

Re: Cherbourg passage plan

That's about the size of it but is still slightly too technical. How about sailing with the lights to your back until halfway across then sail towards the lights?

Can't get confused as the French lights have a better accent than those in Bognor.

If there's enough wind I'm going over tonight as well ... so far it looks as if I might be motoring :(

Try this:

Set sail from Southsea on Friday evening @ 22:00 (HW-3) and had one waypoint in the GPS: Cherbourg East entrance. Arrived @ 12:00 GMT.

Leaving: added waypoint for Southsea. Set sails + autopilot. Had to dodge one moored ship in the Solent 12 hours and 71 nm later but other than that we didn't touch the helm one time on the entire trip - did ease the main around 04:00 though.

Waypoints? lights? Three ferries could enter abreast and not have a problem - it's got to be the easiest passage in Europe. The tides cancel each other out, more or less ... no shipping lanes (TSS) ... SE all the way and NE returning - great fun. Going again in two weeks and then in the October gathering.

Personally I would'nt eat a Cherburgher, too much bone & silicon and not enough meat, probably going off a bit now due to advanced age. Hope that helps!
