Some cracking pictures taken yesterday from an oil tanker at an anchorage point off Antwerp. Plus a pic from the BBCwebsite in case you have not already seen it of Needles. Scary stuff...

Truly Amazing photos for sure!
Just being pedantic, apart from the first photo where the whole ship is almost completely obscured (hence difficult to identify), the next few photos are of a bulk carrier, not an oil tanker.......

And that photo of the Needles lighthouse is simply ace - especially when you compare it with the footage taken of the RTI race last year, when they had virtually no wind, and a strong tide pushing yachts onto the wreck of the Varvassi.....

Just been doing some research re this vessel, who is the 'Selkirk Settler', and found the photos at this website http://boatnerd.com/pictures/fleet/spruceglen.htm

with the following comment :

"The storm pictures below were taken during a North Atlantic storm in February 1987 while the ship was en route from Europe to a U.S. East Coast port. The pictures were taken by Capt. George Ianiev, who was the ship's Second Mate at the time. The big blue wave was the largest wave the ship encountered during the storm; seeing it hit the ship made the vessel's master question whether they would survive the storm".

Yep looks like you are right. The photos were doing the rounds yesterday on an email claiming to be taken this week off Antwerp, I didn't think to check the authenticity. Sorry for promulgating the story. Still good pics though. At least the Needles one was current!

Doesn't matter where they came from originally, they are still awesome photos - thanks for posting them!

The ship appears to be running downwind (to use a raggie term), possibly with the seas coming in from the port stern quarter - and yet the waves are still breaking right over the deck! I hate to think what the photos would look like if she was having to punch into these seas.

2nd pic, if you look carefully you can see the ship twisting, been in some really rough stuff but not as bad as that!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
