Was killing time browsing through Inwards brokerage site, and with the current fx rates, late model Ferretti's seem to be advertised for anything up to double the price of a direct equivalent from Blighty.

A couple of examples:

Sunseeker Manhattan 60, 18.28m, 2008, £1,050,000 ex tax
Ferretti 592, 18.33m, 2008, £1,987,200 ex tax

Princess 23m, 23.0m, 2005, £1,399,000
Ferretti 731, 22.68m, 2005, £2,640,000 (A new one is £3.5m ex tax!)

There's also a 2008 Feretti 510 at £1,175,000, about double the price of a new Phantom/Princess/Sealine/Manhattan 50.

For sure, they are very well made boats, and they've always been able to carry a premium of 10-20%, but that premium seemed to be going up even before the euro rise. At current rates, can anyone really justify paying up to twice the amount over a reputable British brand?

Should be good news for Sunseeker/Princess etal ......

yes but thats really all a £ depriaction in normal terms Ferretti is usually 30% higher to a British build

we have to see the mess with the £ when it goes up again....
at the moment English builds are the cheaper to buy over here in EUROland
LOL you can buy a 1 year old 38 Targa for less then 200.000 EUROS that was unimmaningable a years costing about 300.000 EUROS
we have to see what will happen if the £ stays like this for long, when materials will be going double for UK builers too
£ depriacted 30% in a year to the EU, they say it will recover in 2009....

Yip it look like you guys could be in the Euro before easter, no referendum, no pre-warning to limit the market manipulation. The weak pound is great for UK economy, and should be a benefit to UK boat builders.

The Stirling has never been so weak against the Euro,
So the UK yacht buylders (and brokers) are looking to some exceptional business opportunities in to Europe.
For sure this situation can't remain forever, so either value of the stirling goes up again, or prices (manufacturing costs) go up in the UK,
But it is thrue that for now, some advantage can be done there, especially on big value items such as a yacht.
At least some good news for UK boat business in this period of doom and gloom, isn't it ?

Didn't see this post until today. Yup, Ferrettis have always been 15-25% more than Brit boats length for length when the Pound was €1.50 but now the comparison is stupid as you have pointed out. However to some extent it's not a fair comparison for a couple of reasons. Firstly, Ferrettis are generally beamier than the equivalent length Brit boats and that extra beam with the cab forward saloon design translates into significantly more accomodation volume. A Ferretti 510 is a much bigger boat than a Sealine T50 or Fairline P50. Secondly, Ferrettis are engineered and built to a higher standard than virtually any other volume boat although I sense the gap is closing a bit
Having said this, not only are Ferrettis much more expensive new than other boats but IMHO, that premium is not reflected to the same extent in the used market. There are presumably still enough buyers willing to pay the Ferretti premium for new boats but the secondhand market is more price sensitive. Ferrettis still command a premium on the used market but it is a lot less than the new price premium so if you buy a new Ferretti, you better be rich enough to afford the depreciation. To give you some idea, the first owner of my boat lost €300k in depreciation in 5yrs before I bought it. I have the original invoice. Ouch
So, IMHO, Ferrettis make far more sensible buys secondhand than new as Ferretti owners generally seem to be a fastidious bunch and 4-6yr old Ferrettis often look as good as new and the engineering means they've probably got many years of reliable use ahead still. In fact I've seen a couple of 12yr old ones which still looked sparkling
I've had excellent service from mine and I intend to move up to a larger one (providing the £ recovers a bit!)

thats why some people make a lot of money in the futures or they dont,,,

but it does look better today about 91 pence for 1 EURO then about a week ago which was 99 pence...
in my life I never remeber so much an unstable £, the Italian Lira used to be like that in its past especially 1994-97 period before they where rooted to the EURO....

I second Deleted User Ferretti do look better over time, may be its the color, quality of the fittings, and the classic themed modern design or its a bit of all
the 53 is still a top looker in its size, as is the 550
this new shapes I like but we dont have one locally so its not really that it grew up on me so much
for the bigger lengths famous Italian builders, always ask for a bit of a premium over other builders being it Spanish or English
may be its got to do for the fact that over a certain size they've been doing it for ages....

I doubt the eurozone would have us at 1-1. Be great if they would, it would give us a permanent advantage in terms of wroking abroad and manufacturing here.

The eurozone countries wont let us in now for that reason. The only way it would happen if the rate was reinflated to 1.30-£ ish, then it would be fair for the current euro countries.

We also have a joke about German cars.
Do you know why they used to be good, and now they're not anymore?

How about a quick comparison of contemporary designs? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

They used to be good when they were built by Italian workers.

Now that they're built by Turkish, they're not anymore.
