The expensive one in the engine bay (replaced when Halon went out) has been neatly unscrewed and removed!

So I have to find a replacement.

Question is, I've forgotten what size it was.

Boat is a Fairline Weekend 21 - engine bay is around 8'6" wide and perhaps 8-9' long deep enough for the four cyl lump.

Most I am looking at seem to be 1kg or 2kg - does anyone know what size I need for this engine bay?

Also, I have heard that you should only have one not two in there. Now I assume that the logic here is that you should have one big one, not split the required capacity into two smaller units (makes sense) - however is there anything to stop me having two that are BOTH large enough on their own to be sufficient - i.e. double up rather than splitting down.

My logic for this is that if one failed to fire, the other would go off - mind you at the price these things cost, I suspect that one will have to suffice for now.

What's the best place to get one - seen a few on eBay but they don't seem particularly cheap!

JEES that's pricey - same make but the 2kg model on eBay for that sort of money!

Would 1kg be enough?? I guess I need to measure the engine bay to get the CUft
 
Yeah, I'm not suggesting you buy it from there, was just providing the type for info /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I don't think there is any harm in going larger, however, if it does go off you'll have more to clear up /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

1 Kg powder type covers 1 square metre. 2kg cover 2 square metres etc...

I got a 2 kg for £56 from firemaster. They have gone bankrupt but have been taken over by someone else.

I wouldn't want powder under any circumstances - an accidental firing off means powder would be sucked into the engine intake - potentially wrecking the engine!!

I will measure up the engine bay next time I see the boat

Never, ever buy a powder extinguisher for your engine bay - you'll ruin it if there's a false (or real) firing. I got mine after a long trawl and some good, solid advice from these people http://www.mfs-fire-extinguishers.co.uk/acatalog/Automatic_Marine.html and the kit is mint. It's easy to fit and the guys at MFS were full of good knowledge.

Out of interest what type of engine bay fire extinguisher do you lot recomend? I happen to know the whereabouts of an unused afff remote jobbie that could find it's way into my possesion if not soon claimed.
I guess an engine full of foam is better than a boat full of flame, can't be that hard to set it up so the engines cut when it is activated.
 
That's rotten luck..

I recently replaced mine with these clicky The brackets are a bit lightweight, but otherwise seem well made, and made in UK not China.

If you use two extinguishers then each must have capacity for the entire engine bay.
 
Halon has been illegal for several years now.... at least 5 I think. Shame as it's the best stuff for putting out fires.
