Just getting quotes for my insurance, being a bit lazy I tend to just renew but wish to add single-handed sailing and racing to the policy with no restrictions on distance or time single-handed.

So far Pantaenius are coming out as one of the best value, although I’m waiting on another couple of responses

Any strong views on them from those that had made claims. Their policy does seem to be comprehensive.

Cheers.

Pants have always covered my singlehanded stuff.

I haven't made a claim yet because I find the value of the claim is always the same as the excess.

Get a quote from Y - they seem to have a decent reputation and have come in with a figure that is almost £250 cheaper than our current insurer this year. I'm inclined to take them up on it - unless someone here has had a bad experience of them?

I've been with Haven Knox-Johnston for several years. Just swapped to Pantaenius after reading HKJ horror stories on Mobo site. I was happy to pay Pantaenius more for their clearly better product - but I didn't have to!

I was rather embarrassed to claim from Pantaenius when my boat was T-boned when it was ten days old. They were very helpful and quickly approved the repairs. Have been with them ever since, 11 years now.

When I communicated with Y last year they would not cover single-handed (as in offshore for an extended period of time).

On my travels a few years ago there were times when cruisers have found themselves having to make passages singlehanded due to circumstances beyond their control.

BS of Y doesn't seem to understand that scenario.

+1 for Pantaenius
.
they told me -very kindly- if at all possible let us know when you are leaving port (legs more than a few days long), change zone, arrive at destination, etc which I did, they acknowledged and indeed seemed to follow the various moments.
I suspect if one insures a boat which sinks a week later with the singlehander asleep they might have a different view.

No claims so far, so the above is possibly meaningless.

Just had my renewal and it covers

Inland and Coastal Waters of the UK up to a distance of 12 miles offshore, You can travel between two points in the UK by the most direst route, even though that might take you outside the 12 mile limit .

Single handed - within Cruising Range

So that includes everything that I need.

That's Blue Fin with Bishop Skinner.

They used to insist on a tiller pilot, that has now been dropped

We are with Pantaenius and I think they are very good. One claim, sorted with ease and when you call you go straight to a human. I am more than happy to recommend them to all. Very good with solo sailing and racing included with basic policy.

In sum two thumbs up!

>30% deduction for gear over 10 yrs old, so thats not so good

Not so good but not surprising not much works on a boat after ten years and Pantaenius require a rig less than ten years old.
