We're trying to source [preferably in UK] a solid fuel cabin heater with top plate suitable for emergency cooking in case of breakdown of our main heating/cooking system in our 48' cutter rig sloop. Ideally stainless, otherwise black. Any recommendations?

Sorry - not uch help but . . .

Never thought of posting this on the Classic Boat forum - but we are looking for a small solid fuel heater for our 27ft Albin Vega - a Bengco or something similar, obviously not as big as you are looking for.

Aha! A chance to blow my own trumpet!

er, there's an article about this in the November issue. Written by, er. me. It, er, has the answers you seek...

For some inexplicable reason I missed the November issue. If he mentioned Colin Frame's Faversham heater, apologies. I don't think there is a website but he used to advertise in CB.

Did you hear any more about Marinestoves plan to start production of an oven version.
There was a bit of excitement on the forum last year in response to a post enquiring if there would be a demand for a mini-Aga, then things went silent. I guess it was a chicken-egg thing... they were perhaps looking for orders before committing to a production run.

I'm on their list of potential customers - we need a replacement for the Shipmate that has served us well for 19 years and is now rusting out.

It looks excellent, to me. We have grown used to being able to cook on the coal stove and the addition of an oven will be very welcome!

New Cookery Heatery Magic

Some time ago, a few of us were suggesting a bulk importation job from them - if enough of us were interested, we could convince them to ship to the UK. I'm certainly interested in one of their products, although the Halibut baby-Aga job I fancied last year would, in all probability, turn Crystal's cabin into a veritable sauna. Perhaps the next one down?

Hi Mirelle,

We're currently in Maine for the winter and know a place that has at least 3 shipmate ovens in stock. We tried one but couldn't get on with it. Priced at US$500 and renovated it was the 211 model. Dunno if that helps or you're interested?

I had a "pot belly" cast-iron stove on my last boat for several years, had no problems with it. They need blackening occasionally to stay pretty - I used a mixture of soot and vegetable oil!

They are available at low cost from Clarke's (Epping, Essex). Phone 01992 565333 for catalogue. They supply through local dealers and wholesalers.
