We have them here in Chichester Harbour, they are very handy when racing dinghys as I can remember the depth around each one in the harbour so know how far to push in shore when racing. The only [no thanks] is that they are unlit at night!

I never noticed if there were any in the creeks, when I lived in Gosport.

It seems that the origin of withies are from the Essex salt marshes, still its interesting to know they are being used elsewhere.

Regards.....Dave

some!

many have been recently replaced by proper marks as few or the new breed 'boat out of a box' can handle only one side of a channel being marked by non coloured posts (actually problems even if they are handed)!..... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

What about Scotland.......anybody know of withies used there?

Whilst taking my CS practical, my instructor who came down from Yorkshire kept asking me to repeat the name of withies, so as he could remember them! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Entrance to Island Harbour up the Medina marina has them

I think you will find they've got the heavy duty version - scaffolding poles with cans on top /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I suppose you need them made of steel down there, unlike the east coast, were sailors are used to navigating around objects and sandbanks etc! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Here's a picture of a Blackwater withie:

cor! you east coast wusses. Here on the South coast, the backwater withies are unpainted, and merely protrude a little bit from the reeds.

Wareham springs to mind for some reason!

What about that one l'escargot's picture then? Its BENT! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
