any good sites which give acurate forecasts / actual webcam / windvain live info

fed up at looking at met office site which always contradicts itself

eg: tomorow wind 5 to 10 mph easterly on weather map , but inshore water forecasts quoting 6/7 ?

used to look at a great site on boatastic which had actual webcam live photos of solent conditions etc and wind readings etc

Hi.
The only free (very important that) webcam that i know of in the solent area is on...www.portsmouthharbour.net
Not great, you may think, unless you intend embarking on a lengthy passage from gosport to pompey on the ferry. It is generally pointing about due north from the spice island part of old portsmouth and has (i think) some weather monitoring gear adjacent/attached to it. It has been a pretty accurate indicator of the weather for me when i have used it. There is some basic weather info next to the webcam pic, windspeed/direction,temp etc. You can also wave at the camera as you go by and then look up your footage on the webcam archive later. (so some sad muppet told me!)
give it a whirl.

The inshore weather forecast from met office is ussually a load of rowlocks, wind speeds quoted are always excessive

sometimes the solent has been a millpond yet they quote silly winds

what I would like is local weather cams / wind / wave indicators like the example quoted above which is more usefull, combining this with surface pressure charts to make sure nothing nasty is on its way

Whats wrong with the reports on here. You can look at nearly every wind speed in every marina in the country. Course you have to interpret yourselves, what effect a wind speed from different directions will have.

And dont forget to factor in the thermal winds that are prone to significantly manipulating the gradient winds over the Solent. These vary dramatically from area to area over the Solent (for example there is a well defined acceleration zone off the mouth of Southampton Water under certain circomstances).

Although it may run counter to your inclinations watch out for the Yachting World in the run up to Cowes Week. There are also other bits of specialist knowledge out and about at that time of year.

<font color=blue>The inshore forecast cannot take into account the peculiarities and variations of wind force that has been altered by the I.O.W. causing updrafts etc. What you need there is not a forecast but a sea state condition, this can be obtained from the Coastguard.

And the sea state wil change every time you go round a bend or. Which side of the solent your on. A weather forcast can never be detailed enough to give the conditions for every square mile of the Solent. Main thing in the Solent is. Is it <font color=yellow>SUNSHINING[/yellow It never gets very rough, but much more fun to splosh about a bit.

the following appearing in my mail box coaxed me to register a couple of weeks ago.
>>> WCS Marine Weather <office@wcsmarine.com> 02/18/03 06:49pm >>>
Hi,
First of all, apologies to all receiving this email who don't sail on
the Solent.
For those who do, we are supplying a weekend weather forecast for the
Solent to a company called Yacht Charter Solutions. The forecast is
issued on a Friday and compliments the forecast issued each Thursday by
WCS Marine.
The forecast is free and gives details such as expected weather, swell
and wind conditions every 3 hours. I do not gain any benefit from your
signing up to receive the forecast. I simply think it may be of use to
you.
To register go to http://www.ycsolutions.co.uk/WCS-Welcome.htm
Hope you find this useful,
Best wishes,
Simon

eMail arrives Friday's with an interpretation of the coming weekends weather every 4 hours for the coming weekend in the Solent. When registering you can deline the additional services offered.....

I have yet to test it's (his) accuracy.

I have found www.weather.co.uk to be very usefully (just type Cowes or Southampton into the local box at the top and press GO) and v.accurate up to around 2 days in most cases. Used it all last year to plan.

If you want to know whats been happening at the channel lightship then
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.phtml?station=62103
will get you the info.

If you are Chichester based then Chimet is a good resource
http://194.217.234.16/chimet.htm

A new resource , aimed mainly at pilots I think, is at
http://www.xcweather.co.uk
rollover the arrows to find the source and core data in he left of the page..........

these are my favorites - there are a lot more!

Beware the impact on going out even a mile on the water - can be a significant difference and inshore forecasts are for just that!

It\'s here!

If you go to:

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.ybw.com/weather>http://www.ybw.com/weather</A> you will find +0hr and +2hr Location Weather 'nowcasts' for all parts of the Solent (and all around the mainland UK coast) plus inshore forecasts, synoptics out to three days and so on.

If you are looking at the Location Weather click on the 24hr History link at the top of the pop-up window and you can see the wind speed and direction trend for the previous 24hr period, which is a handy device for checking actual trend against anticipated (to work out if weather systems are running early or late, for example).
