Came back from a delightful w/end in Portsmouth quite a few raggies out and about but hardly a mobo in sight doesnt any body like it a bit rough ?????????????????
Had a cracking chinese at the water margin buffett gun wharf quays
Anyway I reckon it was about 4/5 mayby 6 sea state bit lumpy wind against tide
Prediction for my 1st channel cross wed am sea state 3/4
hope the wind dies a bit
Does it get a bit smoother the farther into the channel you go ????
 
It's a 'truism' that the further off shore you go, the deeper the water you are in, the 'smoother' the swell is. So although the swell might still be high, it's a lot smoother sided, unlike short shart inshore chop. It's a generalisation though, based on wind direction, swell direction, and fetch (how far the wind has blown over the water to build up the waves).

So in general yes, but there are a few more factors to build in as tcm indicated in your recent thread on x-channel trip

It's a bit difficult to summarise in a few paragraphs, but that's the gist
 
The biggest deterrent to going out in these conditions is getting in/out of Chichester harbour. Riding the swell at 15/16kts isn't a big problem, it's the crash, bang, crack, crunch, 1/2 mile from home that causes the most distress to a planing boat...

Tidal atlas

Hi Matt
Had a look at the tidal atlas over the w/end and worked out if I leave at 6.00 am weather permitting I should be taken up the channel (east) on springs with tidal streams running for approx 9 kts for the journey Ive added all the spring tides from the tidal atlas together to get this .Arriving in le harve at slack water
The thing is I want to do as much as I can on chart plotter and auto pilot so dont want to have to plot a course to steer and have to steer all the time.I worked out this might cost me a extra half hour but dont mind this what do you reckon ?????

er, you don't have to steer manually! - find what the extra angle is to compensate for tide, add that to the direct heading and just press "auto" and the boat will hold that heading.

sepretly, with a waypoint enertred for the harbout entrance, if yerv done the calc correctly you will land on the waypj t without having to press "goto" that waypoint. But to strt, you will be heading quite bit south of it. Don't press goto or track until the last few miles so you will deffo get thereanyway, just a bit faster.

Anyway, unknown to the boat or gps/autpilot it will be pulled uptide and you will save that 30 minutes or whatever. My guesstimate was that the course to steer was about 12 degrrees more than whatever the dead heading to le havre from the nab.

although they wdn't like to admit it, raymarine and their ilk are to blame for squillions of quids worth of wasted marine diesel, whereas people like you and me are very environmetnally friendly PLUS not cluttering up the sea by travelling slowly with raggieboat too!

But yep, the boat will get there purely by "tracking" towards a waypoint but that assumes no tide, it's not qucicker or less aggro, and on the way it is correcting and correcting and correcting becos as you know the extra time (and fuel money) is due to the fact it asumes no tide ahead.
 
Not sure where Chichester suddenly appeared from, but surely that is covered under the deeper water is smoother bit. The opposite is that shallower water is more bumpy and crashy - like Chichester Bar
 
I was out. Went to the Folly Saturday, once over chi bar cruised at 27 knots, fairly flat once in the lee of the island. Saw Man united Trounce Arsenal and still lose. Night at the Folly then a flat cruise home in the Sun on Sunday morning.
