Just looking at large vessels anchored-some of them have a note saying steaming eg Nab Anchorage(steaming). Is this just a way of saying that engines are running as a safety precaution and that the boat should not be misunderstood as "being under way even if there is smoke from the funnels. Or is this something else?

Is the site drive by AIS? The manually-updated parts of the static message are often forgotten, so it could be broadcasting "Steaming" because the second mate didn't remember to change it after they anchored.

A while since I used AIS but the terminology then was "under way" not steaming-perhaps someones interpretation. It just semed such an odd term that I wondered what it meant.
