Hi Guys, there are four yellow Buoys with the words Private Beach ground tethered some 300 yards off the beach in Osborne Bay. I understand that a beach may be private, but does 'beach' only constitute the area above hign Water and the area exposed at Low Water, or can they claim a bit of sea as well. I ask the question as very few boats anchor inside the yellow buoys. My boat draws just under 3foot, so I am happy to anchor for a short while in water only 6 foot deep, and also more inshore with greater protection from a Southerly breeze. Nobody has ever come out to challenge mooring in this position, but why dont others also anchor close in, there are no rocks on my new chart?Am I missing something?

No you aren't.

But the idea was to mark off a bathing area, now that the beach is open to oiks (access from land only): if people are swimming, it would be considerate to anchor elsewhere, outside of the zone, but it's not enforceable, and if the chap with the megaphone starts up, you can tell him where to put his horn.

Think there was some debate about this on here last year (?). IIRC, the general consensus was that it wasn't enforceable. Might be wrong...can't remember now tbh.

Oh Wow!Thank you for the link FlowerPower. Well that is a bucket of worms. I have now read most of the contributions and appreciate that the problem is three fold, anchoring, Private Beach, and not just the incorrectly marked buoys. The MCZ zones may well overide a 'bathing area'. I wonder what will be said should the Eelgrass grow to the extent swimmers start getting caught in it, the Elf n Safety mob wont know which way to go. Ho Hum.

Last time I was there (on land) there is a guy with a megaphone telling people that they could not land their rib on the beach. He spends all day looking out for potential landers and warning them off in between picking up litter.

I have never understood why Osborne House doesn't welcome visitors via tenders. The cafe / ice cream business would see a good sized increase in revenue and more people would pay to visit the house. I for one would have paid my money and wandered round the house and gardens. As it is it's too much hassle without a car.

Instead Osborne House take the classic "scare off revenue using some bloke empowered with a megaphone" approach.

You would never guess that English Heritage is Government funded would you? Good to know our £100 million per year is in good hands........

Hi Henry, yes I have enjoyed Osborne House from the land side, but as you say, it is more effort. It would be great to potter in with a Tender, and enjoy the facilities. Mind you it would require EH to do some thinking and planning:(

Yet another cushy number for the peak capped little Hitlers which we are so good at developing in the UK. Other than a megaphone, has he got any powers? My inclination would be to wind him up by anchoring as close to the shore as possible with the genny and music on. If he gets uppity remind him whose taxes pay his wages

We anchored by the buoys on Sunday and the majority of boats seemed anchored further out from them, though we did see a couple of ribs get together inside for a rafted up birthday party. Looked like fun:)

I deliberately anchor inside because I didnt like the attitude of EH. The megaphone lady refused to try my suggestion so I dont know if it fits.

This is certainly what I will do if I'm in Osborne Bay. My fear is that this is the thin end of the wedge...

In SLIGHT fairness for the distance of the bouys from the beach, it hasnt been unsual for jetskis or ribs to cut through or inside the anchored boats and the beach. The only place that I witness greater idiots is Priory Bay. Maybe that is why the bouys are now so far out.
Still, no need to strictly adhere to thay yellow bouy line.

Plonkers, the lot of them.
When the buoys first went up I saw a few smaller mobos tying up to them. I thought that was a fantastic idea. At the time, Megaphone Man was shouting at people telling them they couldn't anchor as it was a conservation area. I think that idea got shot down, didn't it? Well, at least I remember reading the application and it was full of not-entirely-truthful statements.

If I were still in the area, I'd be anchoring nice and close. Be careful with swimmers, but the only swimmers I've ever seen have been ones off boats. Who visits Osborne House to go swim in the sea?

On Monday it was nice and quiet anchored just shore side of the buoys except for one jetski rider who kept running alonside the anchored boats, he actually used my boat as a turning buoy and then ventured between some of the yachts who were less tolerant, he got told to travel away and then did what he should have done to start with and ran the mile or so towards Cowes, where he annoyed nobody.:encouragement: Two other idiots in Mobos ( I get so frustrated by some of us) went down the inside line of yachts at about 10 knots, the worst speed of all, generally pxxxing off everybody. Why are people so thoughtless.
BTW Hats of to the 50 year old who went for a swim from his boat, I stuck my feet in, but not for very long!;)

It's a pity they don't pull their heads out of their backsides and actually welcome all those wealthy yachties. Build a smell jetty off to one side to land dinghies and continue charging through the nose for drinks and nibbles at the pavilion. They'd make a mint.
