Does anyone know of a location in the Solent where swinging moorings for a 23ft long keel yacht can be secured without paying a fortune or having to go on a waiting list for years? I would consider clubs or marinas.

Thanks.

Try Chichester Harbour. It depends on how much you draw but if you could get away with a 3/4 tide mooring then it's cheaper. Vacancies currently shown at Chi Conservancy Mooring Vacancies. A quick call to the moorings officer at the harbour office will give advice on wheather a 3/4 tide would be OK. They do dry but only at springs and some don't dry completely.

A cheaper alternative is Langstone Harbour at Langstone Moorings. There are very few facilities though, and you may end up with over a mile by dinghy. When I looked a couple of years ago the idea was that you got one in zone 3 ( > 1 mile from the dinghy chains at Eastney) and then moved closer as other moorings became available. Langstone has the advantage over Chichester that the maintained moorings are deep water and lauching by the dinghy chains is possible at all states of tide. Many of the dinghy sites in Chicherster are not accessible at all states of tide.

Portchester Sailing club still has room for moorings. You may have to lay it yourself or may be able to buy a vacant one. The club fees including mooring, dinghy stowage etc work out about £250 for our family. There is a web site with contact details.

I recommend Gosport Boatyard. Various locations on western side of Portsmouth harbour. Swinging moorings, access H24, Great water taxi service, private jetty, ample parking. I have a 29' yacht and pay about £900.. more than just a normal swinging mooring but not using a tender is worth every penny... Contact Gilly on 02392 586216.

Thanks for your thoughts on moorings in the Solent everyone - I will make a few enquiries and hopefully get sorted for the new season!
