I know it might seem a bit premature, but I'm trying to plan a winter lay-up in the Solent area next winter (it's not somewhere I know well).
Any recommendations? All the usual apply - fair priced, secure, friendly, allowed to work on your own boat.

thanks everybody

Well I think that lot just about rule out the Solent. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Wilson's yard on Hayling meets all those requirements, but there is not a lot of water to get her to the haul out point, so will need to check that

No where is cheap in the solent. Port Solent is handy and accessible. Gosport Boat Yard is quite good value when I last checked

Have you looked at Wicormarine near Fareham? It's around 1/2 hr up river from Portsmouth. Friendly yard with as much (or as little) help as you want, with haul out and hard standing facilities, a small chandlers & sail repairers on site. Several Scuttlebutters are moored there, so you'll never be short of advice. As to the value of that, I'll leave that for you to judge /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Here's a link to their web site - with a 2007 price list.

As long as your boat is less that 32ft and draws less than 5ft then have a look at PME up at Fareham Quay. We bought our boat when it was ashore there and the cost was reasonable to keep it there until the launch,

Used Thornham Marina a couple of years ago. I'd probably still be there if I wasn't using the sailing club. Nice people. Very accomodating on lift in/out times. Fair prices. Only problem is access for the boat. If you draw much, you'll have to pick the top of the tide to get in & out.

If you can get in. Elkins Boat Yard in Christchurch is reasonable priced, and for once, bloody nice guys that run and own it.

Hi Tony, thank you very much for the referral, albeit some years ago. I wonder if I could ask you to modify the original message as it is referencing a page on our website that no longer exists.

Thank you very much, and if you are ever in need of anything, do shout, we're still here and happy to help.

24hr access (car barrier at night), all facilities on site including large Force 4 chandlers, free to work on own boat to your heart's content, busses on A27 and Burseldon Station a few minutes walk, etc.

They do a 3-month haul, jet-scrub, hardstanding, relaunch winter package (£600 for my 27 footer, but have extended for me the 'deal' rate for longer).

Lucas or Nick can also put you in touch with local specialists if you need them.

Just a satisfied customer, etc.

If you are driving you may want to steer clear of Gosport and Hayling at weekends? Ditto crossing the new Forest to places west of that.
Then there is the wind. Some yards are very exposed to the prevailings, which makes maintenance wearying and a bit more pita..
So that leaves....
Well, Sir might fancy a bit of town life too.. Southampton's upper reaches worked for me one winter. M3/M27 and all that
There are so many other good uns though.
Emsworth Y/H, Beaulieu ( not cheap). Fareham. Birdham Poole. In order of preference..
Thornham would be a challenge I would think.
I have found somewhere that is soo good its not for public consumption ( but then again its not in the Solent per se). But like the bestest anchorages, you just fine em..

Wow! A thread started by me in 07 - a lifetime and many 000s of miles ago.

If anyone's interested, I went to Hayling Yacht Company - just manageable with the 1.8m draft I had back then.
On approach, there are certain aspects of it that look like a tip. But I found it to be one of the friendliest and best run yards I've been in. I had excellent engine work done there, and an Awlgrip repaint to a v high standard, there's a good stainless steel man too.
There was also a lovely couple - both totally deaf - who ran a great burger van. I think they've moved on now.

Dear Scott

I wonder if you couldn't have PM'd Tony instead, rather than drag up an old thread in order to give your company a little punt, and the less than wary a little egg on their faces.

Cheers

Second Wicor marine, able to work on your boat but good back up if needed
