I've got the totally unscientific impression that depths along the Hampshire shore between Hillhead and Lee on Solent are slowly shoaling. In fact most of the north channel going towards Gilkicker seems to have less water than a decade or so back. Anyone noticed this, is it just Meldrewism on my part?

Maybe your boat is slowly sinking /forums/images/icons/blush.gif

or everyone's been throwing anchors overboard and the water levels gone down as a result

Should be detectable from survey data, if it's been resurveyed recently, which I don't know. I would guess that the Solent is subject to a fair degree of attention from HM's Hydrographer or whatever he calls himself, if only to avoid embarrasing incidents with HM's ships.

Re: This sounds like my feeling

It's a shame about Ashlett Creek - I used to go up there with 1.7m draft but wouldn't risk it now. Fortunately I have a friend with a Konsort! I'm not convinced of any substantial fall in depths in the North Channel area in the last 15 years, however.

Quite feasible - <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.ybw.com/auto/newsdesk/20010128125222ybwnews.html>Lymington</A> is certainly under extreme threat at the other end of the Solent

Couple of things ..

where do dredgers such as the pier bashing Donald Redford drop their dredgings?

Surely the submarime barriers have altered tidal flow?

I'd imagine that if deep channels are kept deep and shallow areas start to shallow due to silt deposition etc then that process can only accelerate .. but I'm not a scientist.

Don\'t get me onto the subjext of Lymington silting

This subject just makes me, a Lymington resident, fume. The place is silting up and some of our twitcher cousins are suggesting that this would be no bad idea as this will give more habitat to the myriads of winged things that live around our shores.

To be fair this a mulit-facetted debate with sailors, rowers, twitchers, ferries, National Heritage, fishermen to mention a few, all having their own reasons for increasing/decreasing the draft/extent of the river entrance.

Being a perennial optimist I believe that a solution will be found but, by heck, it certainly takes a while to cut to the chase.
