Well I have just sold my boat and I sold the fixed DSC VHF with it. I think all I need to do is go to the Ofcom website, log into manage my Licences and cancel that particular licence. The new owner of the boat can then apply for his own licence in his name using the same MMSI etc.

Am I correct. Is this how others see it

Thanks

When I sold my last one I left a note with the MMSI number and said what to do ^^^^^^^ He didn't do as above and just registered a VHF to the boat so they gave him a new number..... He would have to either have it re programmed or buy a new set! Can't help some people. :(

can you not just ask ofcom to change the licence to the correct mmsi number

Many thanks all. I just logged on to the Manage my Licences part of the offcom site and surrendered that particular licence. The status now says awaiting surrender so I suspect it is done. All very easy. I will check back in later to see that it is actually surendered

Just had a similar experience as a seller and then a buyer.
Surrendering licence when I sold was very straightforward via Ofcom/Spectrum, so new owner had no difficulty. Transfer of new boat a bit more problematical. Initial search (I used the on line chat function and they are VERY helpful) but they couldn't track the previous owner using vessel name and SSR. Once I took possession of the boat I found the the VHF had an MMSI so used Ofcom chat again and they found that none of the previous owners had properly transferred the licence (!) but the kindly Ofcom lady actually did the xfer via chat all while I was on line. They are very helpful, efficient and accessible.
Morals to the story - (1) the yacht broker, who really should have helped this process just uninterested . Make them do the due diligence properly! Note that the broker has now changed ownership and the new owner is actually very helpful/useful. (2) Why don't sellers do this properly?
