Thought about fitting a solar panel on the roof,of my boat, but there seems to be various types. Can anyone explain the pros and cons in lay mans terms, all this newfangled technology!

solar on the roof ?

Hy,

the roof of the wheelhouse? which voltage ? 12 or 24 ?

I use two modules . Each 40 cells . Connected parallel ( 12 V system ). The moduls are very thin and elastic , about 3 mm thick on the wheelhouse roof with sikaflex gum . Use
a similar pu gum. The 40 cells produce more "drive" to the akkus . I use NC akkus , therefore I need more voltage to get them charged , about 18 volt.

Good luck

Hi, thanks for your post. My system is 12v. Question whats an akkus? I just want to run the fridge and charge the batteries. Like I said Im not exactly "up to speed" technology wise.

Akkus !

Hallo ,
I think , gel akkus are the best , but use a good mpp tracker for solar - charging.
I use a block of 11 Ni - Cd akkus . Each 1.2 volt , therefore 13.2 volt total. The alternator
is set to 18.7 volt , 1.7 volt to each to get them charged tu an amount of about 90 %.
Capacity is 375 Ah. Voltage rising over 1.7 V each will produce gas . I don´t need the
last 10 percent. The accu - block was bought by military surplus and was originally used in submarins. Some akkus like that are in use since 1940 and are working well !!!!!
My are working since 1989 and they were an offer , when I bought them : 7,50 DM each ,
less than 4 € !!!!!!!!! I use no regulator between solar paneels and the accu - block.
Greetings
