After journeying over 48,000km using only energy from the sun, the world's largest solar-powered boat docked in Abu Dhabi yesterday to mark the opening of the annual World Future Energy Summit.

[pedant] given that all wind is ultimately generated by the sun's energy, isn't that what all raggies achieve when circumnavigating?[/pedant]

How about the energy taken to build that boat, + all the fittings, + the solar panels, all the workers driving to & from the various factories...still a major dent in the planet, just pays the right-on lip service.

What on earth are you on about? I don't think anyone is suggesting it is a sensible boat, or that it has been built to be 'right-on'. I posted it on SB because I thought boaters would be interested in it, not to make any particular point. It is a technology demonstrator and a record-setter ffs, not anyone's idea of practical transport of the future.

No doubt lots of the technology has practical applications on board more conventional vessels, or may turn up in future in hybrid designs.

Nice big flat deck , you could get loads of cargo on there and take it , er , not very far then  . good for transporting solar panels though ;):D .
