SOF Boaters - A day in Cannes what do we do ?

In early April we will have a day ashore in Cannes from an ever so slightly larger 'Mobo'.

So what do we do, where to we visit ? - no Churches or Cathedrals please - enough of these everywhere else we shall go on this trip !

e.g. best restaurant for lunch, best viewpoint to drool over the superyachts, etc.

I spent an hour or two just walking around and loved it. I also had a drink on the veranda of that famous hotel by the water. Not cheap but it was totally worth it, simply for the chill-out factor.

Probably not much use to you, sorry.
 
Just up the road , a very interesting and weird place to visit; American owners bought it back in the 1920's , off the wall crazy is the best description. I believe you can eat lunch there when the season starts...chateau de la napoule http://www.chateau-lanapoule.com

Right next to super yatchs which you can walk to on the pretty coastal path.

You can take a trip boat out to the islands, or hire a RIB and blast out yourself. They're about 2NM from Cannes old port.

Otherwise just wander around the old town, the port, and along the Croisette, stopping for food and drink whenever the mood takes you.
 
If you are hiring a car why not drive up to Grasse and St.Paul de Vence. Beautiful little village and some nice little artists studios and coffee shops.
 
Here are some choices that come to mind:

1. Take the train eastbound to anywhere en route to Monaco. Choices to stop and explore would be one of:
Antibes ten mins walk from train (explore the beautiful town and port; loads of lunch places),
villefranche 2 mins walk from train (beautiful bay, beach, lunch on quayside at Mer Germaine),
Beaulieu sur Mer 5 mins walk from train(lunch at restaurant in the marina)
Monaco 5 mins walk from train, and train ride is the furthest on this list from cannes = 1 hour

2. Take a trip boat from cannes old port to one of the two island restaurants - Laguerite as above or La tonnelle on the smaller island Île Saint-Honorat. Personally I'd choose the latter. Much nicer boat ride and you can walk around the island and the monastery. Freeze this video at 0:16 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDRzbJ0ooRk. That's the island, and the restaurant (and ferry boat drop off point) is just to right of centre of picture. Cannes is out of shot to the right of the photo, 1.5 miles by boat. Beautiful spot and you can swim from the shore. At 0.19 you have both islands with Cannes in the far right background. At 1.11 the town and train station of villefranche are in the background, centre frame.

3. Walk around Cannes itself. Not bad, but I'd do 1 or 2 above in your flipflops

4. Train to Antibes. Sprint to the port (10 mins). rent a dayboat from ABS (Antibes bateaux services). Need icc. Then cruise cap d'antibes and the Lerins islands. Be disciplined on timing - you have to refill petrol as you return the boat then allow 40 mins to get back to Cannes port to get tender to your ship. You'd need a full day ashore to do this, not 4 hours, but would be an awesome day out

5. No idea who will be there nor what your dates are, but meet Jimmy and me and have a beer while we glean some airco advice :cool::encouragement:;)

I,ve kept my powder dry on this watched to responces .
Heading E you are just behaving like a punter tourist and falling for the usual tourist traps .

Following the herd

By "no Churches or Catherdrals " and on a cruise ,you have not said how long or what day you will be dumped @ Cannes ?

Buy knowing you from your posts ,iam guessing you would prefer if poss some sort of boat technical fix ?

Rusty barge is right .Don,t follow the herd into predicable tourist traps -easily done .

Head W on the train* or pref bus -ultra reliable -along coast road to La Nap .20 min trip if that !
Bus station is RHS of Hotel D Ville you can not miss it it's the W edge /corner of the port where they drop you off .

Nice Restaurant in Chateau La Nap with an elevated sea view and of my Marina .
La Nap is home to our big 3 .Fr HQ offices and sales centres and many more like Sessa , Grand Banks , Benteau ++ many more .Some decent eateries ,the two @ each end in particular .
Sunseeker /Priny usually have demo ,s afloat ++ any waiting for PDI .

La Nap also does a mini boat show in April ,kinda to kick start the season -- you will need to google "Saloon bateaux La. Nap Avril " --- or something like -- It's free and 50/50 new /used .

Also a 2 star Mich Opposite Marina entrance .€3-400 per head for evening dinner ,but lunch -same stuff from last pm not used -prepped up for € 60-70 per head for two course ,Remember theres a team of 20-30 chefs -so with those overheads ,it's a case of bums on seats .La Oasis .

The best bit for you is to walk along a superb coast path 20 mins to La Rague .
Here you can go into the yard -all welcome and see what works ,what does,t work ,IPS pods on the floor , stabs being fitted ,glass replacement , Arnesons having new rams fitted , polishing ,---- pieste d resistance is the engine shed .
The toilets are at the far end ,you have to walk through .
Here you will see engines ,some being rebuilt ,others " skipped " -- they are predominately one colour ! .
Aicon units in bits too .
There's a coffee machine ,just strike up a conversation or go into the office "enquiring " ask for a look around .

Plenty of boats all sizes in Cannes ,La Nap and La Rague ----

Next day - back to tourist punter mode "Churches ------ " in the next much of muchness Med Ville .

* train --- they are unreliable -strikes ,rock falls etc -- considering you have a rtn deadline -don,t use a train if you have 1/2 a brain ! Or fancy an urgent taxi ride !!

Tee hee - each to their own of course but that would be like taking a trip to London but going to Hounslow, so as not to follow the herd. The herd is in Mayfair and the West End for a reason. :D

You are right about one thing
WEST agreed ------- :cool:

Hounslow depends in London context taking cars for example ,i d rarther be in the dealerships and poking around the service centres as opposed to be in Bond St watching others use try to park them ,Ferraris Bentleys , RR ,s Lambo,s Porkers etc .
Walking around Port Hercule in Monaco dodging Chinese interpreters lolly pops with the herd obscuring your view is not my idea of time ( 6 hour window ?) spent wisely to get a boat fix .Especially after being couped up on a virus infested floating hotel eating medioca food self conscious of where you are in the cabin pecking order :)
Just what he needs after that ---- Monaco !
Great place for "Churches ,Catherdrals ,there even a Palace ,a few nice Hotels and oh a famous Casino to add to that list :)
How ever if it's vice n drugs he's after ( maybe I don,t know him as well as you ? ) -then Bingo -send him to Monaco

Agree each to there own .

Btw is Antibes still the capital on the C d A of petty tourist targeted street crime ,shoplifting ,handbag snatching etc .

Ps my neighbour in our land property in Antibes is a retired copper

My parallel between Hounslow's location relative to Mayfair and the West End, and LaNapoule's relative to Antibes, might have been too subtle :D

Yup, Antibes is always going to beat La Rague/LaNapoule on handbag snatching because of the quality of the handbags. On a per capita basis, LaRague and LaNap top the charts because their denominator is nearly zero. :encouragement:

Just for sake of completing the SoF coast, there's also Menton just another 10 mins further E.
And it's a lovely village, imho!
 
T, in the context of a 'day ashore' I'd follow Nick_h's suggestion and wander around Cannes, and then Jfm's suggestion for lunch on the islands. I probably wouldn't muck around getting the train anywhere, too much time lost to just travelling around rather than doing stuff.

Depending on the exact date, if I'm in PV then I'll whizz down to Cannes on the uber-scooter and buy you that beer I owe you from last summer. (Jfm - want a lift? :D) Hope to see you in April!
