how do the bi- or monopedal forumites manage to prevent socks from descending southwards when in use ?

FWIW I am wearing two pairs of Smartwool winter ski socks, but this phenomenon takes place with a variety of makes and hosiery length.

It could of course be down solely to my shapely calves....

Tube Grip Bandage

Loose but warm wooly sock staying up problem? The solution is Tube Grip Bandage, better than staple and paracetemol. A multiple of uses.

I would suggest you cut a length, 12" say, put on socks, pull over sock to calf interface, double over for extra tension. We use it on our rigs to keep the mud off wrists and hold down sweatshirt cuffs under boiler suits as well.

Seriously ... I used to suffer from falling socks inside my yellow wellies. I wound pvc insulation tape around the top of the socks - worked a treat!

Thick elastic band of suitable size. Pull up over foot when sock on, pull to about 3" from top of sock, then fold top of sock over elastic band.

If it's the right size, ie not too tight, and a nice thick heavy duty one, not some 1mm thin thing, combined with folding the top over, will work well with no DVT worries

This was de rigeur (with sock folded down over the top) when I used to play Rugby. Personally I didn't bother, and just let my socks fall down. Think it may have been a forwards vs backs thing.

As the cold justifies it, wear long johns and pull socks up over them. Good frictional interface and no cold gaps. Depending on your physique you may, however, still get the sag effect but this time from the crotch downwards.

I'm not sure I want to contemplate a saggy crotch at this time of the evening, but thanks for all the helpful hints so far.

I will experiment and post photos in due course, unless anyone comes up with some money.

If you're wearing the socks with wellies (sailing or otherwise) tuck the bottom of your trousers into the socks.

If you're not wearing wellies, then use ski-ing socks. These reach up above the calf top and have integral 'garters' at the top which stop them falling down.

Seempols.
