I recently installed SOB software using NT+ cartridges and Card Reader and it works a treat.

Today I tried to install a Haicom HI-204-USB GPS to work with it but seem to have problems loading the software.

It doesn't download automatically when I insert the disc and although a file seems to have loaded via 'new software' it doesn't seem to ackle.

I am using XP operating system.

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.

I am using a Haicom HI-204III GPS receiver with SOB and I don't remember having any problems with loading the software. The com port on the PC needs to be set to 4800 baud, 8 bits, 1 stop bit and no parity.

You do need to have the receiver "outside" to get any signals, though. However, it works fine on the boat on top of a locker (in the cabin) with only the GRP above it; in the house I couldn't get it to work through a window.

I do remember having to boot up the PC first without the Haicom or else the PC thinks it is a mouse and does strange things; then plug in the Haicom and set up the com port as above.

If you want me to check anything specific then let me know and I will try and help. The PC is at home but the Haicom is on the boat ........... but the boat is only ten minutes walk away, so I can easily bring the GPS home and go through the set-up if it will help.
I'm also using XP.

Alan,

Thanks for this,

What files did you actually downlload from the CD that came with the kit? I only seem to have downloaded the PL2303 driver from the USB Driver folder.

Also, are you using a USB?

Many thanks

James,

I can only find a "PL2303 USB - Serial Driver" in the "Programs" of my PC. There is no Icon and nothing else that looks connected with the GPS. Yes, I am using a USB connection.

Alan.

Ihe Haicom 204 III GPS and dont think I have any issues with it.

I think I downloaded the software from Haicoms site and have a zip file in my download directory:

haicom hi 204 III USB.zip

which has resulted in a directory in my Program Files directory called:

Haicom 204 III

this has an "other" directory, and a USB_Driver directory

The XP directory has the driver files:

ser2pl.sys and ser2pl.inf, there is also a file called serwpl.inf

Laptops here in manchester, GPS is on the boat 1200 miles away. Not sure I can do much more.

Hope this helps - I guess I could send you the zip file if you want....

Cheers

Richard

BTW

I have neverhad to change the baud speed of a COM port, but you do need to make sure that both SOB and the GPS are using the same COM Port.

There is a file called SOB_COM.exe in the SOB directory which tells you which Com Ports SOB can use.... then you select the one you want it to use. Only use SOB_COM.exe with SOB closed down.

and you can check which COM port the GPS is using by looking in Device Manager... You can also change the com port used by the GPS some where in its' properties in Device manager, (Advanced??).

Cheers

A very important point not mentioned here - Always use same USB port each time you connect .... otherwise it will re-install drivers each different port you use ...

There are times that PL driver is old and it can be advantage to download updated driver ... I have a Prolific cable adaptor that refused to work with anything except my palm till I googled Prolific driver and got hold of the latest - then it sprang into life on all other serial stuff I wanted ...

Hi all,

Problem solved - GPS was working to COM3 by default - changed to COM4.

Moved PC to bay window - can now see the sky!

Many thanks for all your help.
