Raw water feed pipe to engine block. Completely choked with salt.

Block aperture. Ditto.

Yeah. My Bukh10 did that, and a friends too. Keep an eye on it now. Your photo looks a lot like a Bukh as well.

seriously, what did you use to dissolve it? Dilute hydrochloric?
My gearbox has stuff like that in it, but it's alloy castings....

The water must be evaporating away when the engine's off, leaving the deposit. How is this happening? The pipe would need to be open to atmosphere for that to occur, I would have thought, but I am prepared to be wrong.
Just how far into the block does the deposit go? You could have a hell of a job on there!

Scraped out with an Allen key from the pipe thingy. Used a teaspoon to attack the stuff in the engine block.

No, the stuff in the block was maybe a 5 mm thick wall of salt. Gone now and I ran the engine at full chat for 40 mins without the temp gauge even flickering.
