Two threads running currently about trying to get decent wifi access.

Isn't it about time we as a community of common interest made it clear to the Lords and Masters who do such a great job of opening our wallets and allowing us to haemorrage our hard earned cash in the name of Marine Services reaised that the time for us to struggle with inadequate wifi provision should by now have passed.

Some places are providing an effective service - but they are few and far between, and most marinas and public accessible mooring faciltiies are simply over priced and awful in this area.

THE BOATING COMMUNITY NEEDS EFFECTIVE WIFI NOW - GOD KNOWS WE ALREADY PAY ENOUGH

Wifi routers have to be limited in power otherwise they'd run out of channels. Routers automatically find and use a vacant channel (or one that's got spare capacity), but if everyone was transmitting at too high power, there'd be none vacant.

I do not profess to properly understand the over jargon rich technical side of wifi, just as my Wife doesn't know how a clutch works.

I do know I can get a powerful signal in Waterloo station, free from The Cloud, hardly a quiet place. No reason why marinas can't install wifi APs along the pontoons like they do lamps, power points, taps and life belts. Virgin now offer this at an increasing number of tube stations - a real challenge for radio signal propagation. This technology is not that expensive now, unlike the fees we all pay out.

The technical resistance argument is not one that IMHO stands up. The opportunism of Marine firms to fleece there clients is staggering.

I think you have a very valid point superheat and agree with you 100% I too don't understand any of the technical jargon but I for sure think its terrible in this day and age that marinas can not supply a decent internet signal for us to use its hardly new to the market is it

come on all you marina owners for god sake listen to what we all want surely its not too much to ask is it and I don't believe it would cost a fortune either

Wifi at Portishead is generally fine, but a TV signal is a no no. Have to use TV from the wifi, which I really can't be bothered to do most of the time, so listen to the radio or nothing. For me, the tranquility of being on board is something to savour, although I do like to browse this forum :)

Moodynick setup the system at Berthon and you can get excellent Wifi in the engineroom!

just a positive note to say that in Porte Montenegro we have very good wifi fro free, several poles with a box with many antenna's on each pontoon

for those who recognise Blue Angel,
there is one pole oppisite the boat, on the other side of the pontoon, and 1 more on the end of the pontoon

but agree with OP that wifi in Marina's should be available more generally, just like electric and water,
this could even be for safety reasons, having easyly available all last minute updates on ao seastate predictions.
