So who\'s being ripped off ?

Browsing through a colleague's Canadian boat mag- 'Boatjournal':
Sea Ray 370 1990 Twin Mercruisers $89900(CDN) - Approx 40000 pounds.
MBM Broker:
Sea Ray 370 1992 Twin Mercruiser 80000 pounds.

Its the same story throughout the dealerships and brokers.
Apart from the 'rubber stamp' and a few minor details these are the same boats we're buying over here.
Why do we put up with this ??

I know the old owner of the uk sea ray. Very well looked after if you are interested and the engines are only 3 years old.

Part of the difference has got to be the transport cost from the US to the UK and the VAT and other duties that we have to pay on top but the major reason is the very weak dollar which at close to $2/£ is at historic lows at the moment. It was'nt that long ago that the rate was close to $1/£ which would make the US boat look a lot more expensive
The fact is that whilst the $ is weak, there are going to be many apparent bargains. I dont think anyone is being ripped off, its just that there is a market anomaly due to a short term exchange rate situation

Another boating-related point about the weak dollar- this time of benefit to us...........

Ever feel like sitting back and letting someone else steer?

Ever fancy a bigger boat??

Star Princess (109,000 tons) certainly wouldn't fit in my marina berth, but you can have a week cruising the Caribbean, including flights to & from Miami, for £ 769.

Three or four years ago you would pay double!

Now I think its about 2500 miles from Miami to Bahmas, Mexico, Grand Cayman, Jamaica and back, let alone the distance across the Atlantic. Compare that fare with the fuel costs for taking your own boat and there's a massive saving, before you take into account that all the food is included!!!!!

Me, I'm looking forward to this October, when I'll be spread out in the Jacuzzi on deck 15 at the stern, cold beer (or several) in hand, enjoying the sun and watching the 19-20 knot wake in the blue Caribbean sea.

Shame that I can't do any of the above (except the cold beer) this weekend on Windermere!

How can that question be relevant to a boat or a cvan when both can be moved anywhere in the world? the only question is manuf cost and tax if these equate to a lower cost than all UK cost's we are being stung!!!
