So who is \'Dave\'?

Wont comment on the Daily Telegraph article mentioned in another post - right load of old garbage /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But come on now, here is an interesting challenge:

[ QUOTE ]
We tied up at one of the locks along the river, to wait for a narrow-boat to come the other way. Attending to the gates was Dave, the lock-keeper who has worked this stretch for 26 years. He is responsible for the splendid floral displays.

He, when the sun decides to break through, sells ice creams from a cooler. As he opens the gates for you he will tell you about the lore of the river, about the currents and eddies. If you want to know where the nearest riverside pub is, and at what time they stop serving food, Dave is your man.

[/ QUOTE ]

So...who is 'Dave' ????

Answers on a postcard please to......etc etc.

(Heres a clue - its not the lockie at Bell Weir /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: So who is \'Dave\'?

when i lived in Henley, the lockie at Marsh was "Dave the Lock". mainly during the 90's, haven't spent much time there recently but if it is the same Dave, excellent fellow.

Re: So who is \'Dave\'?

Teddington Lock - whats the prize /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif no don't answer that.

Re: So who is \'Dave\'?

Dave Free was the previous lockie at Marsh, last I saw him was at Godsow.
Dave F once came on board Straight Across for a drink at the Trad Rally, didn't leave till the next morning, by which time we noticed many (many) bottles of wine were empty.

Doesn't sound like any lock keeper I've encountered !

I think that 'Dave' is some sort of fantasy amalgam character invented by the journalist anxious to make sure that facts don't get in the way of a good story!

Who is this journalist?
[ QUOTE ]
Jim White is a sports columnist, an arts critic and the manager of his son's football team - these and many other subjects are held up for dry appraisal in his witty observations.

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]
JIM WHITE
Does the Environment Agency need to wring cash from the rivers?
Jim White says short-term thinking is now being applied to the very people who could save lives during a flood.

[/ QUOTE ]

Pray please tell me how the lock keepers could save lives during a flood? Once all the weirs are fully drawn there is nothing anyone can do about the situation until the water recedes and normality returns. Are 'accidents' always going to conveniently happen in the vicinity of locks?

And, as a matter of interest, the article says:
[ QUOTE ]
...we saw cows splashing about in the flooded meadows,...

[/ QUOTE ]

...anyone know where that was last weekend???

Re: So who is \'Dave\'?

Dave at Temple does not fit the profile in the article for 2 reasons...
1) He does not have a vegetable plot
2) His home is not at risk

I have a feeling the character has been made up, nobody fits the profile... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: So who is \'Dave\'?

It crossed my mind that Dave is not a lockie at all but the Ice Cream man at Old Windsor Lock
