So where exactly is the Mobo capital of the UK?

We should consider:

Number of Mobos in the area
The Mobo to 'rag and stick' ratio
Quality and Quantity of Facilities provided for mobos in the area
General friendliness towards mobos
Ease of Mobo access to inshore, coastal and overseas destinations
Number of Mobo friendly marinas/moorings in the area
any others you can think of.......

My vote goes to Brundall on the Broads... loads of mobos based there and hardly a raggie's mast in sight, loads of facilities, marinas and moorings and everybody is friendly towards mobos because they are all mobos.

Pity about the fuel costs at Brundall though and the rest of the Broads, come to that. Also the very serious job of dodging the holidaymakers every mad Saturday. Oh and the length of time it takes to get there from anywhere outside Norfolk. I do like the place though. Full of boats that never get further than Oulton Broad or the Berney Arms or the WE at Bramerton. (you obviously being one of the exceptions) What's the 38 called btw.

However IMHO Brundell fails on the other accounts, its up a river so no easy access to the sea let alone going abroad in one hop from Gt Yarmouth!

My vote must go to Chichester or Port Solent, high percentage of Mobos to Raggies, inshore waters in less than 1 hour and France in less than 4 hours pontoon to pontoon.

Holiday makers are a factor but they are dying off more and more every year. Cost of fuel maybe a little high but then the moorings are not too extortionate when compared with the South Coast. At the end of the day it is a bit of swings and roundabouts but it would be interesting to identify some true mobo friendly places to visit in the UK.

Thames

Got to be the Thames, on the broads you can even still hire a rag boat, Thames nearly 100% mobo if you don't count them peasky dinghy things. Lots of Yacht clubs with all mobos (well Brooms actualy) membership.

Re: Thames

Birmingham.

Not a raggy in sight, all moorings specifically intended for powered craft, pretty much guaranteed calm water, too narrow to permit tacking across your bows, good pubs and curry houses close to most mooring points.

Plenty of channels to choose, from the bustling main one to Wolverhampton to the rural creeks out in the direction of Cannock. You can even impersonate a sailing vessel for that "dark side" experience, spend all week afloat and find you have gone no futher than you could travel in three hours by bicycle.

Re: Antibes

almost 100% english speaking, towards 90% red dusters, zero anti-mobo feeling, easy in-out thru tideless harbour and flat water beyond the walls where warm water means you can dump the hook about half a mile out to jump in for a swim, and every half a mile thereafter. Even rubbish photographers like jfm can show how even the crappier anchorages are 97 times nicer than Newtown Creek. Top atmosphere in local pubs during footie matches, chinese and curries.

In antibes you hail people in English, say "excuse me", and don't feel embarassed that boat is too new, to big, too old, too small or too crap: as wel as being home to the biggest private boat around, Antibes holds the record one of the most rubbish boats in europe "Ca Suffit", skipered by a bloke who wears his underpants instead of swiming trunks and paints the boat with household paint, the door "lock" is an old battery, a sort-of not-mast is a bit of telegraph pole, the boat never moves and the deck furniture is 10-yearold manky £5 patio chairs, and i love it.

In antibes, even the hangers-on are called things like Learner or Adarcy, and turn up with stacks of booze to cadge a lift or pontificate whilst on the pontoon. And that's quite good too.

Re: Thames

Powered Craft. Nah, they're not powered, engines barely big enough to move 'em.

Saw a boat moving in Gas St. Basin once, at least I think it was moving, difficult to tell/forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

Re: Antibes UK

yep, you have correctly identified the cacky boat.

However, Antibes is English by right in the same way that all of France is ours since our defintively winning Agincourt in 1415. They just speak a language that went out of fashion a few hundrd years ago, and have naughtily welched on the deal whereby France is ours after the death of the old king of france due to the fact that Henry V died beforehand and was suceeded by the 9month old Henry VI. Now there's a very good issue ignored by ALL the political parties these days: war with France. Always a total winner with the electorate and very good for the economy too!

Re: Antibes - location

it's about an 90mins from Gatwick or Heathrow or Biggin Hill. The very worst resturant thereabouts is better than the very best near port solent. The power is 32 amps or 62 amps or 150 amps so everyone can turn all the aircon all day, no prob, and it's warm enough to wear swimming trunks all day and all night.

Re: Antibes - location

sortof. Easily the largest tonnage of UK boats are in antibes. But Naburn is in Yorkshire so that's obviously better. Mind you, bit East Ridingish and a worrying straigt run to Hull, so black mark for Naburn. Also, bet there's no curry house in naburn (aka Debtor's Retreat) so antibes wins by a short head.

Note: antibes is so english that it's total windup for the marina staff who refuse point blank to speak english on the vhf. But the nice ladies in the office will speak english and are very nice as long as you say bonjour to start. Which is about the same as in Naburn i spect, cept you say eyup.

Re: Antibes - location

The Blacksmiths Arms does a Chicken Madras (served with Poppadom and choice of chips or rice). Also Sunday lunch served noon till 7.30

AND

Martyn Whiteley wintered his Birchwood at Naburn.

AND

You can't understand what the lockkeepers are saying on the radio either.

How can Antibes match up to these bold facts?
