another boat question to get the ranters going!
Same rig ,engines ,winches electrics, plumbing as everyone else -and my experience is its the bolted on bits which break......

They are cheap?

The Bav 50 at SIBS looked rather like it had been built from a flat pack.

But, saying that, we met a guy who chartered several and found them excellent.

So, probably there is nothing wrong with Bavarias. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's just that after you have paid for a certain sized boat and you see a Bav at 1/2 the price, you wonder if you have been had, or the Bav owner has.

One Forumite I met last summer has a Bav 36 and is very pleased with it. And it certainly sails well when he is on the helm.

IMHO there is little to choose between the "factory" made boats. Jeanneau prices for the "i" series seem to have been reduced to counter the sales threat from Bav.

I have looked at JenBenBav extensively, and I want a Bav ( but currently cannot convince SWMBO it represents a better buy than food, clothes, pensions, investments, etc. ). /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

That should get em going but you forgot keels cookieboy

Not a lot, true they are built to a price, and would arguably be even better value if cost cutting was not such a priority. Aside from the well known keel failure on one of the Match series boats there are no major issues, but the cost cutting has in my view gone too far. You also need to look carefully at the specifications and add in all the extras you will need. Some of the higher priced boats have a lot more as standard, and that closes the price gap a bit. On several of the Bavarias I would definitely want the larger engine option.
When I was in Turkey a Bav 50 came in to the marina and I noticed that a stern fairlead had been ripped off. By the look of the teak toe rail where it had been fitted it had been held on by two fairly small woodscrews instead of being bolted down, this is the sort of penny pinching which is a false economy.

Whats wrong.... IMO - nothing!

They are good yachts and at a good price. I've sailed many days on one and can't complain about anything. They are good cruisers with plenty of space below.

This is a question of priorities now I bet you can't beat this...

I was in my local corner shop this evening and the couple in front seemd to only have £10 between them. At the checkout after the items had been totaled the wife asked the cashier to deduct the toilet paper the total then reduced to £8.80, at this point the wife noded to the husband and said go on. In a flash whe was off and back with a single tin of beer.

They left contented.

It's a bit of a sad reminder of how little some people had, but the mind boggles at the sense of priorites.

Go on then, I looked at some new ones recently.
The finish made me feel physicaly ill.
You get exactly what you pay for and, as you say the fittings are propriatry brands but undersized so what on earth, given that there is no such thing as a free lunch are they to fixed to?

Re: Guapa

I think the Dutch are the most wonderful people in Europe.

We do all our sailing surrounded by really nice Dutch people - well actually, surrounded by quite a lot of Belgians who haven’t anywhere of their own to sail, but that aside, they are really friendly people and the really good thing is, they all speak such amazing English.

Don’t knock the Dutch!

Crikey, only my Nan's brussels ever did that.

And you got it just by looking!

Not exagerrating then? Just a little bit perhaps?
