So what exactly are \'Articles of Sailing\'...

for instance Sticky, and several other sailing schools threaten

"If for any reason a student does not accept an order from the instructor or his designated substitute, whether the student considers it to be reasonable or not, the student shall be considered to be in breach of his Articles of Sailing"

Sounds remarkably like the 'Articles of War'. Are they read out to the crew every Sunday after prayers? And does each article end "...shall suffer death"?

My Articles of sailing consist of:
Wet weather gear,Thermals,toothbrush,Log, Charts.

So I'm afraid I'm not sure how one could be in breach of ones wet weather gear, may be you put it on sideways?

Perhaps it was written by a lawyer...

In England the training period for lawyers was called "Articles" and trainees were called "Articled Clerks". So maybe its some garbled reference to them being trained.

Just a thought.

'Articles' are the agreed rules and conditions under which an association operates. Thus 'Articles of association' govern the operation of a company, 'Articles of faith' are the binding points of belief in a church, and 'Articles of war' govern discipline in the armed services. 'Crew's articles' govern the behaviour of crew members on a ship, and 'signing on' is a recognition that one's life is to be governed by those articles.

The 'Articles of Sailing' should be given to a student before signing up for a course, so that the student knows what rules he or she is accepting.
