I haven't seen a boat pass by in 2/3 days. Excepting of course the Rowers who probably bless this time of year. It always seems to me a great pity the river isn't more utilised in the darker months. Boats have central heating and there's some glorious days to be enjoyed. I know lock closures restrict stretches but my reach is over 7 miles long between locks and one can still use other stretches either side of mine.

I used to really enjoy the winter months when on the Thames, and used to volunteer to come out last, and go in first, and the lock keepers got to know you, and would let you through even when red showing, if they knew you had the power to handle it. Running the central span of Henley bridge was great fun in full flood.

No central heating on mine tho!

I agree. I put central heating, hot water, 240V electrics (to watch DVD's) on my boat, and the family still show no interest unless it's sunbathing weather.

Byron - I seem to remember that for Dave Dyer, of our acquaintance, it was a tradition always to spent Boxing Day on the boat. They used to load their Christmas dinner leftovers on board and a fresh box of crackers and have a family party cruising up to Wallingford and back.

I always leave it until very late to winterise or take the boat out in the hope that we will have an opportunity to get out on a nice crisp winters day. With the heating going full blast, a steaming mug of coffee and an empty waterway I cannot think of anything better.

Sadly I do not think my wife and daughter will have the same enthusiasm. I did manage to poke my nose out on my own last weekend just to give the engines a run and it was delightful. We also had tentative plans to go up to Beale for the fireworks, but we could not fit it in and as it turned out they were cancelled at the last minute. I fear that I will admit defeat very shortly and wrap her up for the winter.

She is staying in the water this year though so I may get the opportunity to have the odd lunchtime on the boat on the pretext of having a bit of peace to complete that important report or to brush up my business plan.

We will still be going out during winter in fact went out last sun

iniskip and me popped down from our moorig to kew it was a bit chilly but sunny we stayed at the bulls head there for a cheese burger and chips ( btw exellent was PURE BEEF ) got our feet wet the tide was over the top had to rant at a coaching boat was coming past too fast and causing mayhem on the river side
After lunch had a potter downstream only saw 3 boats a few robos fours and eights came back in to mooring at 3 ish home and the obligatory sunday doze

All in all a wonderful day

Can someone tell me wot this winterising lark is all about ?

Dave really did enjoy his Thames boating. Blakey too would always be seen out even on Christmas Day.
