Ive got the money and made a choice for 37' Flybridge. Now looking at the expensive bits.

Is there an average engine hr time per year? Like cars have 10 to 12kmiles per year, how about a boat? talking of 63p diesels, 1996 boat how do I know when the engines are tired out?

I think most boats do around 50/100 hour per year (average 75?) However, especially with diesels, higher than average hours does not mean they are necessarily clapped out, often the revese applies. A properly maintained diesel engine doing 300 hours a year will generally be in better condition than one that does 25 hours.

Agree, 75/100 pa typical. The 63ps are totally solid. They will have cruised at 2300rpm all their life. I'm sure they would do thousands of hours. We have 500hours on a pair and they're like new, can eat your dinner off em. The official oil change interval is 100hrs and if that has been followed they will be perfect. There should be nearly zero smoke even on cold start. You never hear of problems with this engine

re low good vs high bad

As other posters have indicated your choice should be made with reference to the condition and previous servicing of the unit.A seller clutching a big bundle of service receipts is a welcome sight.
If an engine with high hours bothers you then you should pay the extra wodge for a low hours unit, but this will not always mean that you will be proctected against interesting bills at a later date.IMHO.

There was a thread about a week ago about engine hours etc. The conclusion I drew was that there is a buyers perception that low hours are good (50-100hrs /yr) which has very little logic behind it. It is however the perception and consequently drives price. So if you buy a 'high' hrs boat then you will buy cheaper and sell cheaper.
Again while on my perception tack Mercruisers are less popular than Volvo in Europe so cheaper buys (and sells) for very similar products.

good - regular (even above average) usage, engine services in October/November; considerate owner who uses adn thinks about engines and boat with new oil protection through winter layup
bad - irregular low hours with services in April / May; doesn't use boat enough to really care about engines and believe in getting things sorted for his use rather than when the engines would appreciate it!

OK very very general but...............
