So here's the thing. How do you determine who is in charge? Are there going to be a fleet of black RIBS in the solent, crewed by over zealous Nazi's charging around at our expense looking for anyone having a good time? Is it the helm who can't drink? Or the skipper? Or both? Or anyone actually on the boat? How will they catch you? What would the penalty be - banned from driving? Banned from being on the boat at all?

Yet more stupid, badly thought out unenforcable legislation from a Government that is so stupid weak all it can do is form groups to form groups to decide on legislation nobody wants or needs.

I suspect there will be large fines imposed that will subsidise 18 year old single mothers, illeagal immigrants and lazy b'starts on the dole as well as shoring up the country after GB has raped and pillaged for the past decade.

Back on topic, people on Jetskis are mainly oiks thereofr are unlikely to pay anu fine, therefor they might as well not fine them. Makes perfect sense really.

Now everyone repeat after me:

'this is anoth GB revenue making stealth tax that serves none of us'

just another optional tax to solve a problem that doesn't exist and keep the public sector burgeoning. I guess we could think of it as a job creation scheme where the alternative is to leave the tossers on the dole any pay them that way. This way, at least they'll percive they are making a useful contribution to society.

Oh I dunno, 5 pissed up herberts thumped their 35ft cruiser into the pontoon opposite me at the boat repairers last week, having just run her aground outside the bay. Apparently they had minimal directional and speed capabilities so they just aimed for the pontoon, then forgot to jump off in time to stop it from thumping the pontoon.

After mooring up they carried on drinking by all accounts, probably to numb the pain of the bill they'll be receiving to fix the smashed outdrives.

But that is my point. The legislation will NOT stop that sort of thing happening, it will just mean that WHEN it does our bankrupt government can coin in some additional revenue, while tut-tutting and saying how aweful this is hadn't we better introduce mandatory testing oh that will be another £500 to get a licence thankyou very much.

No point trying to fine Jetskis cos:

They aren't registered
They're too quick to catch
They probably wont pay even if you do catch them

Nope, just like unisured, unlisenced illegal drivers the authorities would rather go for the easy life and target those law abiding enough to pay without complaint

Yup, as you say, they've got to be caught in the first place. Seeing as the harbour authority's can't even be bothered to catch the idiots waterskiing inside the 5 knot limits I doubt they'll bother with those under the influence. Hell, us sportsboats weave about enough at low speeds to give the impression we're already several buckets over the drink drive limits so I don't know how they'll differentiate anyway.

If you are in the driving seat of a vehicle with the keys in the ignition with a blood alcohol level over the limit then you can be done for DWI.

Does this mean that if you are sitting on your boat, anchored and entertaining some friends over dinner that you could be done?

It looks as if it will be up to the police to exercise some judgement here ............. Oh dear!

At least it will have one advantage. If the next door neighbours in the marina are still partying at 2 am you can call 999 and report a suspected DWI, bet they'll be there like a shot to impose the fine.

thank you - but the proposed legislation is to apply to boats over 7m and/or capable of 7knots..........jet skis manage 7 knots when I last looked. The exemptions will be effectively small sailing cruisers & some dingys but windsurfers , multihulls and other dingys wouldn't be exempt.

Seems about right for a change - although the principles etc are misguided and the application will create a larger safety issue as SWMBOs suddenly find themselves navigating back into crowded harbours .........

Well as you say anyone with common sense would realise that, but according to Ladyman on YBW:

Dr Ladyman said the regulations will not apply to PWCs: "Jetskis will not be included in the regulations for now because the Court of Appeal has ruled that jetskis are not ships and are not therefore within the scope of the existing legislation I intend to consult on extending the legislation to them in due course."

Ok, so I've just come back form the IOW festival, staying at Island harbour.

Its fair to say I consumed more alcohol most days and nights than I should have, at night the lock was shut so only damage I could do would be inside the marina (quite a bit then!) but I had no intension of going anywhere!

Also what about when I was off the boat chatting to other and left our friends on board who were a bit on the pissed side, they didn't even know how to start the boat never mind move it! would they get fined or would it still be me dispite not even being on board??? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
T'is a joke /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
