can you tell me, does a sea-going boat need a certificate before she goes through the last salt water lock or do you have a period in which to get the vessel certificated and registered? I want to use a marina which is just beyond the last salt water lock. I do not want to go canal boating! And what do I need to watch out for, bearing in mind I don't carry gas, before someone will certificate a saily boat.

This is as it was put to me;
If Battery is unsealed then Compartment must be vented, better to use sealed.
Cooker, I use one of those picknick stoves with a cartridge. Any thing that is portable is excluded from the check ( MHO).
I use an outboard with Tanks on deck so are vented.
Dont know if any of that is of use, but I am going down same route.

In the real world

Is a Lockie going to cheeck your boat

He/She Ain't

cheers Joe

Glasson Dock marina is beyond the last sea lock, and we were never checked, (3 different boats, many times between 1995 and 2006).

Not sure whether this will have changed since BWB bought the marina... the yard staff suggested that H&S was a top priority, so they may be working towards BSS.

Gunfleet, it shows the profile of a forumite who names himself BSSOffice and is indeed from the BSS Office.
Nil points, lucky you werent playing the Joker. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes I got that. But what is it meant to mean? My original question was abt real world experiences. I don't suppose (I may be doing him a disservice) Mr BSSOffice will feel able to do much more than regurgitate whatever is the official line. So unless Mr BSSOffice has tried to get a boat under the noses of the BSSOffice he won't have much to offer. I joker your joker. Dix points plus!

Aren't you looking for the official line? They may well have a Grey Area policy for visiting craft, its just a question of risk asssessment and acceptance. After all, I looked at the BSS rules with regard to fuel lines, and they made no sense at all to an ancient canal boat engine installation.

Our team is from Nieupoort in Belgium, and we had the wobbly backside costumes and floppy ears on whilst playing our Joker!! God Bless Eddie Waring and Stuart Hall........

I have been through Boston lock many times, into BWW controlled water and have never been asked for any certificate. I went into South Ferriby Sluice (Humber) and was asked for one but I told them I did not need one as I was a sea-going craft and was only visiting so they said "OK"!. I did stay a month and they never asked me again.

I think they are more worried about numpties who buy a boat on the canals knowing nothing about nothing rather than us intelligent knowitall seagoing types who will have the sense to keep our boats in good order.
