Well after a some unexpectedly nice Easter Weather in the South Hams we got plenty completed on the boat.

Now I can see what the problem is with the rudder.
The "rudder stirrup" no longer has any bearing at the bottom, so the SS rudder tube is allowed to fall lower, which also means the bearing at the top is not located correctly.

Picture of the removed rudder stirrup, which is made of steel, I think this is a repair and is not original from new? but this is just my suposition.

I plan to get a replacement made up in Stainless Steel, unless anyone is aware of a similar item available off the shelf?

I'll then get a dilron? bearing machined to fit the bottom rudder tube amd hopefully all should be nice and tight.

Any thoughts or Snadragon 747 experiences?

I doubt if there is anything available off the shelf. This is what was on the skeg of my 747 after I cleaned it up and had a new bearing made to replace the one that dropped out:

snapdragon rudder.

I am sure I read a detailed description for 747 rudder repairs
in one of the Association newsletters with pictures.
I gave my copies to the new owner when I sold my 747
but they are likely to be available from the Snapdragon
association secretary. Always found him very helpful.

snapdragon 747 rudder update

The solution in the end was to get a replacement stirrup made in Stainless steel.
This had a delron (sp?) bearing made to fit.
Pics below for any future people repairing.

In total the parts cost £200 all sorted by the boatyard guys

An old thread but my findings may be relevent, or not. On our Snapdragon 747 the rudder was well worn at the bottom, and the bush had come out of position above the rudder at the hull. I noticed that both bearings were still intact, but had been rotating and wearing the fibreglass causing ovality, this created excessive movement particularly in the lower bush mount. My method was to position rudder in the correct location and syringe an epoxy mix with colloidal filler in to the oval cavity. Some wil seep in to the rudder stock, although it won't adhere to it. Let it all set a day or two and job done, saves cutting the skeg apart, for now at least.

i bought a load of 1mm washer when i fixed my rudder to use as shims to get the height right so it doesnt bounce up and down
