snapdragon 26 actual tonnage;i have recently bought a snapdragon 26 but am slightly confused concerning the actual weight of the boat for transporting by road.the spec that i have gives the displacment as 4500lbs but the original manufactures spec gives a tonnage of 6tonne can anybody help

The 4500 figure is about right for displacement. The "6 tons" is more likely to be Thames Measurement, which is not related to weight.

The displacement figure is the one you need, Displacement = actual weight, but the manufacturers figure does not usually include all the gear added later so for lifting and transport you need to allow a bit extra.

I actually found a figure of 4000 lbs in PBO no 227, November 1985 but elsewhere I have found figures around 4500lbs. The lower figure could be without an inboard engine while the higher includes one.

The 6 tons could be the gross tonnage if the boat were registered and is a measure of all the below deck space or as said it might be Thames tonnage although the formula I have gives figure of 6.7 for the that,

"The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea" gives good explanation of the different tonnage measurement systems should you be interested.

I also bought one recently and the mover ( http://www.boattransportation.co.uk ) reckoned that although they were supposed to be 2 tons, they are more like 3. Mine arrived on a 6 wheel boat trailer towed by a transit flatbed. Mover unloaded it onto my flatbed, using a fold away set up, and I towed it home 1/2 mile with a little fergi tractor.
I have no connection just a satisfied customer. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Does seem high.

I have the original sales literature for my old 26 (£1995 + engine in 1965) and 6 tons is TM. Displacement is shown at 4500lbs and ballast at 2200lb. When I sold it the buyer took it away on a trailer towed by a 4x4. It was assumed for towing purposes that the weight was around 2 and a bit tons (unloaded).
