Hello again Guys
As our Lysander 17 grp restoration is well underway.
We have now been gifted a Snapdragon 21 to restore.
So any tips and ideas should we pursue please?

Hello Tranona,
Thank you for your advice and handbook link very helpful.
The Snapdragon is an abandoned boat with everything in place except a fixed radio, so we'll our handheld.
So we're hoping for a bit of power washing, paint and launder the sails and ropes/sheets.
I'm trying to post some pics but struggling with the original photo size.
Best regards Nigel.

My first comment is that there is a bit of a difference between the concept of "restoration" and just taking on some cleaning and painting!
That being said, IMHO, a handheld radio is not adequate in all circumstances , soI would replace the missing VHF with a new fixed VHF, and in the process replace the antenna cable with the best quality co-ax. Regarding the painting; I would suggest rigorous attention to detail in the preparation of the topsides, making sure that every square centimetre is properly abraded with the correct grade of sandpaper, and that you remove all dust, using Tack Rags and clean the surface using acetone.
For a boat of this size and antiquity, I would not go down the road of two-pack paint, or even any paint with "marine" or "yacht" in its name, but instead would recomend the use of Sandtex Exterior 10-Year Gloss, with the apropriate primer/undercoat. I have used this on a fleet of six 19-foot keelboats belonging to a sailing school seven or eight years ago, and they are still looking respectable, despite the treatment they receive.
I should add that there are many threads, searchable on these fora, regarding the painting of boats, which would yield a fund of knowledge, particularly in the area of "rolling and tipping off" .

Top tips I seldom follow.
start and finish one job at a time.
Get her in the water as soon as possible,

Big refits stall and can leave you with something you can get rid off. A Good clean and tidy and most boats look grand. Have some fun and see if it grows on you.

Best regards Nigel,

I use a simple program called PIXresizer which lets you reduce the file size to, say, 50%, which normally then loads ok. You can then save the reduced size to your computer if you wish, along with the original.

You can download it free from a number of sites, there are alternatives which do the same job of course

Upload to a server site such as IMGUR ..... that will then give you a URL to post direct ..... just copy the link and paste.

If you want to direct load to a post - then Windows PAINT will resize - no need for any other program ...

I can offer no advice on the practical aspects of boat restoration - but from the psychological aspects, with two boats I would try to always keep one in commission so can go sailing (even if in imperfect condition) and only one with work underway at any time.

Definitely Dunedin!

Blue Dragon first after a good clean and wash of everything.
Make sure she's safe to sail then out with a couple of experts.
